Revera has called on Western Digital and its HGST Active Archive System to provide the cloud storage backend for its Vault storage offering.

Leveraging HGST, the Kiwi cloud services provider – now part of Spark – offers a distributed storage environment in excess of 14 petabytes.

The company says the geo-dispersed architecture provides customers with effortless access to data, consistent performance and maximum data durability and allows it to deliver cost-effective storage for cloud applications, backup and archiving, disaster recovery and big data.

“Customers can ingest data in Auckland and immediately retrieve it from Wellington, even in the event of a complete data center loss.

HGST was previously Hitachi GST.

Robin Cockayne, Revera chief executive, says Vault changes accepted models of enterprise data management, a model typified by disk-to-disk replication with tape completing the trifecta.

“But tape is fast becoming the dinosaur of storage media as cloud services deliver unlimited scale and flexible object-based storage systems, Cockayne says.

Western Digital says the HGST Active Archive System is a fully integrated, Amazon S3-compliant, scale-out object storage solution delivering 4.7 petabytes of raw data storage in a single rack.
