Huawei's open source innovation inspired by 'Of All, By All, For All’

FYI, this story is more than a year old

Huawei has acknowledged the importance of open source and the role it plays in accelerating innovation within the software industry, stating that ecosystems such as openEuler, openGauss, openLooKeng, and MindSpore have created an ecosystem of open source basic software projects.

At the recent Computing Industry Basic Software Summit in Shanghai, Huawei Kunpeng Computing Business vice president Jiang Dayong called open source an ‘important' part of the company's computing ecosystem strategy.

The openEuler, openGauss, openLooKeng and MindSpore open source communities are all ‘led' by Huawei as the company seeks to lay the groundwork for full-stack hardware and software collaboration.

According to Huawei the openEuler community, which focuses on open source operating systems, has grown to include more than 2000 contributors, 60 Chinese enterprises, and six Chinese operating system vendors.

Many Chinese universities have also jumped on board - the first being Tsinghua University, which jointly releases openEuler and openGauss technical books in joint collaboration with Huawei.

Huawei states that other universities including Fudan University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and Tongji University will also provide related open source courses in the future.

The most recent openEuler 20.09 was released in September. This release includes 1+8: one kernel plus eight innovation projects, covering multi-core acceleration, iSula2.0 lightweight VM, StratoVirt cloud native container, BiSheng JDK, Compass CI, A-Tune intelligent tuning tool, UKUI desktop, secGear precision computing framework, and IMA integrity measurement architecture.

openGauss is described as an ‘enterprise-grade open source database', focusing on high performance and converged business. Six Huawei partners have released commercial versions of openGauss so far. openGauss is based on 2-socket Kunpeng servers and delivers up to 1.5 million tpmC.

openLooKeng is an open source product for data analytics and big data. It is able to draw on cross-source and cross-domain high-performance interactive queries, virtual data marts and unified data query without migration or conversion.

“openLooKeng 1.0 supports diversified analysis on a unified engine, allowing interactive analysis of hundreds of billions of data records within seconds, and collaborative analysis of hundreds of billions of data records across multiple data centers.

“Huawei will continue efforts in building unified engines, robust ecosystem, and high reliability,” the company states.

Huawei Cloud - AI Open source business general manager Du Junping says that open source enables organisations to create innovation and value in an environment that is ‘open, fair, transparent, and secure'.

Huawei says it is inspired by the mindset of fostering a sustainable, open source basic software ecosystem ‘Of All, By All, For All'.
