Samsung previews the new Galaxy Tab S5e
Tue, 19th Feb 2019
FYI, this story is more than a year old

Samsung's latest iteration of its popular Galaxy tablet, the Tab S5e, seems to showcase that it is actually possible to be larger and lighter – which makes you wonder why so many modern devices still feel heavy like bricks.

This week Samsung provided a sneak peek at the Galaxy Tab S5e, ahead of its release in Q2 2019.

The Tab S5e's edge-to-edge display tops out at 10.5 inches and an 81.8% screen-to-body ratio, which houses a WQXGA (Wide Quad Extended Graphics Array) Super AMOLED screen.

There are also a couple of cameras (13MP rear cam and 8MP front cam) for those in-the-moment snaps and video chats.

If you've ever been hands-on with a modern Samsung device you may have encountered Bixby, Samsung's AI assistant. The Galaxy Tab S5e will feature the new Bixby 2.0.

This is all powered by Android 9.0, which is loaded onto a 64bit Octa-core processor and choices of 4GB memory + 64GB storage or 6GB memory + 128GB storage.

This from Samsung's president and CEO of IT and mobile communications, DJ Koh: “The Tab S5e is a top-tier tablet with a sleek design and powerful features, available at a new price point.

“For users who want intelligence that keeps them connected so they can get more done—as well as a big, beautiful screen for a rich, premium entertainment experience—the Tab S5e delivers.

It's no surprise that Samsung believes its device is an awesome piece of tech - it also believes that sound is an important part of the tablet experience.

Quad speakers feature auto rotate stereo technology that adapts depending on whether you're holding the tablet in portrait or landscape mode.

“The Tab S5e also features Dolby Atmos integration and sound by AKG, for immersive 3D sound and professional balanced audio.

Just to make sure you know that Samsung thinks its sound quality will be worth the listen, it preloaded Spotify within the Android operating system.

The 7040 mAH battery is equipped with fast charging and it can apparently last up to 14.5 hours – although that's under lab testing conditions. Results will probably vary.

Somehow this all manages to fit into a 5.5mm body that weighs 400 grams and comes in black, silver, or gold.

It certainly looks like Samsung has upped its tablet game at a time when most big brands are concentrating on the latest, greatest smartphone.

It's certainly a major step up from the old Galaxy S3 tablet that's sitting on my coffee table…
