​At the recent annual developer conference, WWDC, Apple announced its newest desktop operating system – macOS Sierra. The question is, what can the Mac do now? Well, soon you'll be able to just ask.

Siri will soon take up residence on the Mac via the upcoming update, with brand-new capabilities to help with the things users do every day on their desktop. The features that iPhone and iPad users are familiar with will be accessible on the Mac with further functions designed specifically for the desktop.

Easily accessible from the Dock, menu bar or keyboard, Siri will enable users to voice their commands to search for information, find files and send messages. As an example, a user could ask Siri to locate a document they were working on the previous night, add a meeting to their calendar or start a FaceTime call.

Users can also drag and drop items from Siri search results into documents or emails, pin Siri search results in the Notification Centre to keep an eye on relevant information, set reminders, search their photo library and even adjust system preferences.

Now that Siri has been released for the Mac, it is now across all four Apple software platforms – iOS, macOS, watchOS and tvOS. Not to mention handling more than two billion requests per week across 36 countries.

“macOS Sierra is a major update that makes your Mac smarter and more helpful than ever with improvements to the apps you know and love and great new features throughout,” says Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering.

With the current technology on offer, one can only wonder when the plethora of science fiction movies about artificial intelligence will become a reality. Robocalypse anyone?
