ADLINK unveils compact OSM modules for advanced IoT solutions

Thu, 11th Jul 2024

ADLINK Technology has introduced the Open Standard Module (OSM) by SGET, signifying a notable development in the embedded computing sector. The OSM, which measures just 45mm x 45mm, aims to set new benchmarks in compactness and functionality, catering to evolving IoT applications and modular systems production without overheads.

The new OSM modules include the OSM-IMX93 and OSM-IMX8MP, built on the NXP i.MX 93 and NXP i.MX 8M Plus, respectively. These modules reflect ADLINK’s continuous engagement in advancing the embedded computing landscape. Henri Parmentier, Senior Product Manager at ADLINK, shared, “As pioneers in the establishment of the Open Standard Module form factor, we’re committed to delivering even more innovative solutions, empowering customers to unlock new possibilities."

The OSM form factor is notable for its compact design. The largest module in the OSM series is 45mm x 45mm, which is 28% smaller than the Qseven (70mm x 70mm) and 51% smaller than SMARC (82mm x 50mm). Despite its smaller size, the OSM is equipped with 662 pins – significantly more than SMARC’s 314 pins and Qseven’s 230 pins. This feature allows for the incorporation of a greater number of interfaces within a minimal footprint, addressing the growing demands of miniaturisation and complexity in embedded systems.

The OSM’s design includes a Ball Grid Array (BGA) format, which enhances its usability by integrating more interfaces on a smaller board. This characteristic is particularly advantageous for IoT applications where space, cost efficiency, and diverse interfaces are crucial. Additionally, the power envelope of the OSM modules typically remains under 15W. The modules are also designed to endure extreme vibration, making them suitable for deployment in rugged and demanding environmental conditions.

Parmentier further remarked on the significance of this progression, stating, “The OSM sets the stage for continuous computer-on-module innovations, and we are proud to be at the forefront of every edge computing solution.”

ADLINK's introduction of OSM development kits, which include OSM modules and reference carriers, is another decisive step towards facilitating prototyping and reference on the spot for developers. These kits aim to support comprehensive interfaces that address the varying needs of innovators and engineers in the field.

The practical applications of the OSM modules are diverse, ranging from IoT installations to industrial machinery requiring resilient computing capabilities. By combining a compact design with multifunctionality and durability, these modules are positioned to address the requirements of several sectors that rely on advanced embedded computing solutions.
