Tue, 28th Jan 2025

Sensor Tower has unveiled its annual State of Mobile report, detailing the trends influencing the global mobile economy.

The report highlights the remarkable growth in mobile usage, with consumers worldwide spending 4.2 trillion hours on mobile devices over the past year, marking an increase of 5.5% compared to the previous year. This significant uptick underscores the continued importance of mobile devices in daily life.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications have become mainstream, with key players such as ChatGPT and Google Gemini contributing to a 180% year-on-year growth in this category. This surge in AI app usage has propelled this subgenre into a billion-dollar market.

The gaming sector saw the induction of four new titles into the billion-dollar club in 2024. Additionally, the increased popularity of cryptocurrency apps and emerging trends hinting at consumer fatigue in the streaming sector are reshaping the digital landscape.

Chinese e-commerce platforms, SHEIN and Temu, have been instrumental in the rise of downloads and user engagement. Their ongoing expansion into various markets across Europe, Latin America, and Asia has fueled this growth, contributing to a dynamic shift in e-commerce trends.

In the social media realm, TikTok continues to be the most downloaded app in 2024 within the Social media and Social Media categories. The app has shown impressive year-on-year growth, reinforcing its dominance in the sector.

This year's State of Mobile report is designed to be highly interactive. It allows users to explore data on individual countries, app categories, and specific applications of interest.
