AI & mixed reality fuel GPU sales surge for ETB Technologies
ETB Technologies has reported a significant increase in revenue from its GPU (graphics processing unit) sales, driven by expanding customer demand linked to artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing sectors.
Revenue growth
The company stated that year-on-year GPU sales revenue was up by 33%. The number of units sold increased by 31% compared to the same period in the previous year.
ETB attributed the surge to rising interest across multiple sectors, including SMEs, consumers, and healthcare.
AI sector impact
Most of the demand has come from organisations developing AI-enabled solutions. There has also been a marked increase in orders from companies operating in the AI as a Service (AIaaS) space.
Analysts expect the wider GPU market to grow substantially over the next decade, with projections citing a rise from USD $63.22 billion to USD $592.18 billion globally by 2033.
Industry drivers
Demand for higher-performing computing technology is also being fuelled by sectors needing more data-driven applications. These include industries undertaking scientific and engineering simulations, such as aerospace, automotive, and biomedical genetics. Growth is not limited to the technology sector, with additional uptake reported in manufacturing, logistics, film, advertising, architecture, and gaming related to mixed reality (MR) and 3D rendering applications.
Sustainability concerns
The sharp increase in GPU usage, however, raises questions over environmental impact. The industry faces challenges linked to e-waste generated by rapid technology turnover. There has been a notable rise in refurbished GPU adoption as businesses seek alternatives to buying new equipment.
"The demand for GPUs has skyrocketed over the last few years and it shows no signs of slowing down now. With the UK Government announcing plans to expand the nation's data centre capacity, I fully expect the growth in AI to continue, something that is sure to cause greater demand for GPUs.
"It's not just AI driving the surge though. We're seeing major uptake in mixed reality (MR) 3D rendering applications across industries such as manufacturing, logistics, film, advertising, architecture and gaming.
"As businesses continue to balance performance, cost and sustainability, it's clear that a strategic approach to tech investment is more important than ever. AI, MR and other demanding applications will continue to evolve so making smart, sustainable tech choices will only become more critical," said Nick Stapleton, Managing Director, ETB Technologies.
"With technology usage at record highs, there's a real risk of exacerbating the global e-waste crisis. That's why it's so encouraging to see more businesses turning to refurbished GPUs as a sustainable alternative to buying new. And we've seen first-hand how refurbished GPUs can help businesses meet their performance needs and sustainability," said Stapleton.
