AI-powered video therapy app launches waitlist for early access
Therappai has opened its early access waitlist for an AI-powered video therapy app that includes a crisis buddy system, with a full launch scheduled for November 2025.
The app seeks to address the ongoing global mental health crisis, citing World Health Organisation data showing that 75% of people with mental health conditions receive no treatment. In the United States alone, more than 60% of young adults report experiencing overwhelming anxiety, while access to therapy is hampered by lengthy waiting lists and prohibitive costs.
AI video therapy
Therappai is introducing what it describes as the world's first AI-powered video therapy solution, offering interactive video sessions that aim to replicate the experience of meeting a therapist in person. The platform will be available around the clock, providing support anywhere globally, and will also include text and voice-based therapy options.
The app incorporates a crisis buddy feature that automatically detects potential signs of a mental health crisis and alerts trusted contacts designated by users. This is designed to provide added support during critical moments.
James Colley, Founder of therappai, said:
"At a time when millions can't access therapy, we're creating something radically different. Video therapy is the closest thing to being in the room with someone - and that's what makes it powerful. For me, this isn't just a business. It's personal."
Personal motivation
Colley, previously the co-founder of fleet management software platform Whip Around, has spoken openly about his personal connection to mental health challenges. He describes his shift from growing a technology business to aiming to address mental health barriers following experiences of burnout and witnessing friends encounter difficulties accessing care.
Colley explained:
"I've been through the grind where success on the outside hides struggles on the inside. I've seen people close to me unable to access the therapy they needed. I built therappai so no one else has to feel stuck or alone when they reach that point."
Key features
The app's early access version, planned for release in November 2025, will introduce several features targeting the affordability and accessibility of therapy. These include:
- On-demand AI video therapy sessions available 24/7
- Voice therapy sessions using human-like AI voices
- Text-based, private chat support
- The crisis buddy system for real-time monitoring and support
- Personalised dashboards to track emotional wellbeing
- Commitment to privacy and confidentiality
The company states that these features are designed to reduce both financial and geographical barriers commonly associated with traditional therapy.
Early waitlist members will have access to the platform ahead of the general public, with global availability on both iOS and Android devices planned after the early access phase.
Bridging the gap
Therappai is targeting individuals struggling with stress, anxiety, depression, or burnout who either lack access to conventional therapy or are affected by societal stigma. The app's use of visual AI technology seeks to replicate the trust and safety associated with face-to-face sessions, which Colley says differentiates it from text or audio-only offerings.
Colley outlined the broader mission of the company, stating:
"Technology should amplify care, not replace it. therappai bridges the gap for those who might otherwise get nothing. It's therapy in your pocket, without the barriers."
Therappai's waitlist is open, with early adopters set to receive first access to the AI-powered video therapy sessions in advance of the app's wider release.
