FYI, this story is more than a year old

A chip that can carry data at up to four times the speed of thosecurrently on the market has been unveiled by Alcatel-Lucent.

The FP3 processor can carry a whopping 400GBps, or enoughfor 70,000 simultaneous High-Definition video streams, or 8.4 million retailcloud sessions, Alcatel-Lucent says.

Not only that, the spectacular leap in capacity isaccompanied by greater environmental friendliness, with the chip said to reduceoverall power consumption by up to 50% from current technology.

The 400GBps limit is expected to be the benchmark for other chipmanufacturers in the immediate future, with Alcatel-Lucent executive LindsayNewell saying the figure is ‘the obvious choice’ for the next two to threeyears, given the state of current technology.
