Black Friday boosts internet traffic in NZ & Australia

Cloudflare has released data indicating an increase in internet traffic in both New Zealand and Australia as Black Friday approaches.

In New Zealand, e-commerce DNS traffic has steadily increased since October, peaking on Saturday, November 23, with a 9% rise compared to the previous week. The second-highest traffic was recorded on November 24, followed by November 21.

Internet traffic in New Zealand saw significant increases on November 15 and 21, 2024, with traffic 18% and 2% higher than the previous weeks, respectively. Throughout November, weekly traffic has been increasing steadily, with a noted 4% rise during November 11-17, followed by a 1% increase from November 18-24 compared to the preceding weeks.

In Australia, spending is anticipated to increase by 2.7% compared to the previous year. E-commerce DNS traffic has also consistently risen since October, with a significant surge noted in mid-November.

The peak day for e-commerce traffic in Australia was Sunday, November 24, showing a 5% increase over the previous week. The second-highest traffic was recorded on Tuesday, November 19, with an increase of 6% compared to the week before. DNS traffic for the week of November 18-24 showed an overall increase of 6% from the prior week.

Internet traffic in Australia experienced a yearly peak on November 21, 2024, with a 4% increase compared to the previous week, closely followed by peaks on November 22. Traffic growth has been consistent since mid-November, with increases of 4% during the week of November 11-17 and 2% during November 18-24 when compared to the preceding weeks.
