A New Zealand telecommunications agency has become the first provider to offer unlimited internet to Kiwi schools, dismissing previous worries regarding data caps and costs.

Auckland-based CallPlus will allow schools full access of the government’s Ultra-Fast Broadband and Rural Broadband initiatives to improve the learning benefits of pupils around the country.

Currently serving 25% of New Zealand schools, the parent of internet service provider Slingshot will provide customised fibre packages which cater to specific school needs.

"We believe schools should be able to take full advantage of ultra-fast broadband without cost or data caps being an obstacle. Unlimited internet does just that,” says Kelvin Hussey, general manager of CallPlus.

"We have added a number of great bonus features to our schools’ Starter Pack to enhance the learning experience, as well as to support the administrative functions of schools.”

CallPlus has partnered with renowned innovators HP, Fujitsu, and content filtering providers Watchdog to offer a safe, secure Wi-Fi hotspot solution, enhance the learning and teaching experience, and facilitate learning outside of the classroom.

As part of the company’s ongoing commitment to education, CallPlus works with Slingshot on the Better Schools programme – an initiative that enables schools not only to reduce their communications costs but to actually raise funds.

"When a school joins CallPlus they are added to our Better Schools programme,” Hussey said.

"Parents and friends of the school who use Slingshot then select the school online to trigger CallPlus to donate a percentage of their monthly bill to their school.

"Whether the money goes towards new sports gear, IT equipment or some library books, it is all about helping schools and putting money back into educating our young people.”
