Can IBM make a difference in your workplace?

Live from Westcon Group Imagine 2013, IBM tells TechDay how it can make a difference in your workplace and make history at the same time.

Speaking during the Innovation session at Auckland's Langham Hotel this lunch time, IBM's Asia Pacific innovation leader Brendan Paget spoke about how the company has adapted to the changing world of IT.

"There has been lot of changes since 2005," said Paget.

"Who would have thought that communicating 140 characters would be all the range or that social media would spur millions of high school grads to reconnect through Facebook, or that Apple would dominate the consumer media/phone business?

"What about the move of email, internet and maps from computers to phones? And this thing that everybody is now talking about called the cloud?"

Currently based in Taiwan working two-years ahead of the market, Paget spoke about how the world is a constantly changing place, and how IBM can help businesses maintain pace.

"The amount of information we generate globally is massive," Paget said.

"But a lot of it is unstructured as it is generated through text, voice, video and images etc.

"Yet the question is how do you use this information to obtain insights? Essentially, how do we make sense of this information?"

During the past few years, Paget said 90% of the world's information has been created, but with such a staggering amount of information at hand, what do we do with it?

Smarter Planet, describing the emerging era of computing.

Branded as a corporate initiative of IBM, Smarter Planet seeks to highlight how forward-thinking leaders in business capture the potential of smarter systems to achieve economic growth, near-term efficiency, sustainable development and societal progress.

By a Smarter Planet, IBM is talking about intelligence being infused into systems and processes which enable services to be delivered; physical goods to be developed, manufactured, bought and sold; everything from people and money to oil, water and electrons to move; and billions of people to work and live.

"Welcome to the decade of smart. Start here. Finish smart," IBM describes Smarter Planet.

And on how IBM can change the world, Paget spoke of Christchurch, and IBM's Smater Cities Challenge 2013.

In 2010, IBM Citizenship created the Smarter Cities Challenge to help 100 cities over a three-year period to address some of the critical challenges facing cities.

By contributing the time and expertise of a top IBM expert from different business units and geographies, Paget said the company puts them on the ground for three weeks to work closely with city leaders and deliver recommendations on how to make the city smarter and more effective.
