Chirp Network & Farmsent join forces for global IoT farming push

Tue, 11th Jun 2024

Chirp Network, a decentralised telecommunications network, has announced a new partnership with AgriPIN project Farmsent. This collaboration aims to provide Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity to more than 160,000 farmers. The objective is to optimise the global food supply chain while increasing the profits of small farmers.

Farmsent is a blockchain-based platform for farmers, designed to enhance the global food supply chain and boost small farmers' revenues by enabling direct connections with buyers. One of its flagship initiatives, decentralised product passports (DePPs), creates a ledger to trace the journey of agricultural products from the farm to the table. This initiative has already helped reduce reliance on intermediaries, lower prices, improve environmental stewardship, and increase transparency.

So far, Farmsent has successfully conducted a beta testing program, onboarding more than 160,000 farmers from three countries. A remarkable achievement credited to the DePPs initiative is the shipment of 20 tons of avocados from Colombia to the USA, achieved with a transparent and tamper-proof journey record.

This new partnership will leverage Chirp's global IoT network to enable real-time monitoring of various agricultural processes, from soil moisture levels to crop health. The data collected will be securely recorded on the blockchain, offering enhanced transparency and traceability.

Additionally, Chirp has plans to expand its satellite capabilities to ensure connectivity even in the most remote farming areas. This expansion aims to bridge the gap between isolated regions and global food markets. By adopting smart devices connected to this satellite network, farmers can receive real-time data on critical factors such as temperature and humidity during the food transportation process.

Tim Kravchunovsky, founder of Chirp, shared his enthusiasm: "We're thrilled to partner with a project that has such broad real-world applications. The sustainability of global food supply chains is one of the most important factors for a fair and equitable future of life on Earth. Our partnership aims to leverage the power of blockchain technology to lower costs, improve food safety standards, and bring much-needed efficiency into the agricultural sector."

Yog Shrusti, co-founder and CEO of Farmsent, corroborated the significance of the partnership. "Farmsent was created to empower small farmers and enhance food security with the help of blockchain technology. Chirp's global IoT network will facilitate seamless data collection from even the most remote farming locations. Chirp's solution is compatible with any sensors or devices used by our growing network of farmers, ensuring unlimited scaling opportunities for this partnership."

This partnership is expected to bring transformative changes to the agricultural sector by utilising technology to close the existing gaps in the global food supply chain. By recording every step of a product's journey on a decentralised ledger, both companies aim to ensure the safety, transparency, and efficiency of food production and distribution processes.

By integrating their technologies, Chirp and Farmsent are poised to revolutionise how food is produced, monitored, and transported across the globe. This heightened level of transparency and technological advancement is expected to benefit not just the farmers but also the end consumers, promoting food security and fostering a more equitable global food system.
