Cisco & Intel unveil new range of servers for hybrid cloud infrastructure
Wed, 7th Apr 2021
FYI, this story is more than a year old

Cisco has unveiled a new range of server solutions equipped with Intel's third-generation Xeon Scalable processors, designed to support hybrid cloud infrastructures.

The Unified Computing System (UCS) server models include the Cisco UCS B200 M6, C220 M6 and C240 M6 servers, all of which feature native integration with Cisco's Intersight hybrid cloud operations platform.

The Intersight platform adds the capabilities build into the 3rd-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, such as Intel Total Memory Encryption (TME), Intel Speed Select Technology (SST), and Intel Optane persistent memory modules (PMem).

Through the Intersight platform's policy-based management feature, users can invoke their PMem memory policy upfront, removing the need to enable Intel features individually.

According to the company, Organisations are using more applications to deliver digital experiences for their customers, partners and employees. However, IT operations teams must cover core, edge and cloud environments.

The company states that automation and observability have become essential to manage this complexity. As a result, there is a need for modern infrastructure and new operational tools to bring simplicity and scale to hybrid, diverse computing environments.

“Today's announcement continues this tradition, and it could not come at a more crucial time. As customers' hybrid cloud journeys accelerate, the need for simple yet powerful solutions increases,” comments Cisco cloud and compute business unit's vice president of product management, DD Dasgupta.

“Cisco and Intel are proud to deliver solutions that not only meet the demands of today's workloads but provide the foundations necessary to embrace new and emerging technologies.”

Cisco's HyperFlex solutions and its converged infrastructure portfolio will also be enhanced through the new capabilities within the Intel Xeon Scalable processors.

Applications include VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure), databases, AI and machine learning, big data, and a range of cores, frequencies, features, and power consumption levels.

Intel Xeon and memory group corporate VP and GM Lisa Spelman says the collaboration between Intel and Cisco unlocks processor and server benefits for customers.

“As workload demands continue to grow and evolve, flexible infrastructure that is optimised for multi-cloud, AI and serves a large variety of workloads is imperative for customers.

“That is why we have created a platform that delivers flexibility, bringing AI everywhere from Edge to Cloud, and we are thrilled to bring the latest 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors to market with Cisco's new UCS servers, enabling customers to confidently take their next steps towards modernizing their infrastructures.

Cisco says the new servers are planned for general availability within the next 90 days.
