Data shows 82% of enterprise devices lack Windows 11

Wed, 7th Aug 2024

ControlUp has revealed that a significant portion of enterprise Windows endpoint devices have not yet transitioned to Windows 11. According to the data gathered by ControlUp's new Windows 11 readiness assessment tool from a sample of over 750,000 devices, 82% are still operating on earlier versions of Windows, while only 18% have made the switch to Windows 11.

The report highlights that of the devices yet to migrate, 88% are ready for migration, 1% can be updated to meet the necessary requirements, and 11% need to be entirely replaced to support the new operating system. The readiness assessment underscores the urgency for enterprises to move to Windows 11 before Microsoft ends support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025.

"The clock is ticking for enterprises to adopt the more secure and capable Windows 11, yet many organizations are stuck, unsure about their environment's readiness," said Simon Townsend, Field CTO at ControlUp. "But doing nothing is not an option. With more than four in five devices still needing to make the switch, now is the time to fully assess Windows 11 readiness to ensure a seamless transition with less downtime and disruption. ControlUp is simplifying this assessment with a new one-click widget that instantly identifies devices that are out of compliance with Windows 11 hardware requirements."

The transition to Windows 11 requires endpoint devices to meet specific hardware features and system requirements, including a 64-bit CPU, Secure Boot, and a TPM 2.0 chip. Older devices that lack these features will not support the new operating system, making early action essential to avoid logistical challenges and increased expenses. Delays in upgrading could lead to hardware shortages or shipping delays, further complicating the transition process.

Shannon Kalvar, IDC Research Director, emphasised the importance of planning for this transition. "The last few years have forced organizations to continually re-evaluate their endpoints," he said. "With the Windows 10 end-of-support date approaching, it's imperative for organizations to plan their move into the next generation of operating systems and consider enabling AI on endpoints. Understanding an organization's posture around this event, amidst the broader digital landscape changes, is critical to advancing their digital strategy."

The ControlUp Windows 11 readiness assessment tool, part of the company's unified digital employee experience (DEX) solution for physical endpoints and applications, provides real-time insights and assessments of an organization's readiness to migrate to Windows 11. This tool is available for a limited-time free trial as part of the ControlUp Edge DX 50-user VIP pack.

ControlUp's data, compiled from early August 2024, includes insights and trends segmented by industry, company size, and geographic location. Detailed data breakdowns based on these parameters will be available soon, providing enterprises with a comprehensive understanding of where they stand regarding Windows 11 readiness.
