Datacom has announced it will open a new data center in Hamilton, as well as expanding the capacity in its Auckland and Wellington centres, to ensure ongoing capacity having secured a tidy government IaaS contract.
Work has already begun on the tier-3 Hamilton facility, and it is due to open in early 2013.
Datacom’s New Zealand CEO, Greg Davidson, says the government’s adoption of cloud computing will have broader ramifications for the industry.
"The NZ government’s embrace of this innovative technology paradigm will further spur its adoption across the country,” Davidson says, "which can only be good for productivity and the economy.”
Datacom is creating a standalone platform for the government programme, Datacom Cloud Services for Government, which will be available within 90 days.
The contract is for a period of 10 years, with an optional five-year extension.
Revera was also appointed as a provider, and the government is said to be still in negotiations with IBM.
