Delving into the state of Aussie & NZ internet

By Sara Barker
Mon 4 Jul 2016
FYI, this story is more than a year old

The state of the Internet is looking bright, according to Akamai's Q1 2016 State of the Internet (SOTI) Report. Australian and New Zealand statistics draw on broadband adoption, connection speeds, Internet disruptions, how IPv4 is running out and how IPv6 is starting to take over.

Australian statistics from Q1 2016

  • Highest average peak mobile connection speeds in APAC at 147.6 Mbps, one of only four countries worldwide to reach over 100 Mbps, alongside Germany, Israel and Thailand
  • Telstra Direct one of the top 20 global network providers for the most (4.5%) requests made over IPv6
  • Increase in average peak connection speeds (broadband) at 43.8 Mbps, a 12% increase quarter-on-quarter (QoQ), plus a 6.8% year-on-year (YoY) growth. Although increasing from 60th to 56th place on the global ranking scale, the country's gain was the smallest in APAC, trailing behind Indonesia, which saw a 535% increase
  • Average connection speeds of 8.8 Mbps, representing 15% YoY growth and 7.7% QoQ growth, but still remaining in 48th place globally
  • Adoption of broadband connectivity above 15 Mbps increased to 10%, representing 50% YoY and 24% QoQ, but dropped to 46th place globally
  • Adoption of broadband connectivity above 10 Mbps increased 35% YoY and 17% QoQ, but dropped to 50th place globally
  • Adoption of broadband connectivity above 4 Mbps increased to 78%, representing 8.2% YoY growth and 6.4% QoQ, but the country still dropped to 60th place globally
  • Average page load time (broadband) increased to 4128 ms, up from from the previous quarter's 3632 ms
  • Average page load time (mobile) was 5111ms

New Zealand Statistics from Q1 2016

  • Peak mobile connection speeds of 96 Mbps
  • Average peak connection speeds of 49.8 MBps - QoQ of 16%, and 28% YoY growth. The country moved to 49th place in global rankings, up from 53rd place
  • Average connection speeds of 10.5 Mbps - QoQ of 13% and YoY of 25%, but still dropped to 43rd place globally
  • Adoption of broadband connectivity above 15 Mbps reached 15% - indicating 123% YoY growth and 40% QoQ, placing it far above Australia in 38th place globally
  • Adoption of broadband connectivity above 10 Mbps reached 33% - indicating 59% YoY growth and 328% QoQ, moving from 42nd to 40th place globally
  • Adoption of broadband connectivity above 4 Mbps reached 91% - indicating 5.3% YoY growth and 3.5% QoQ, making the country rise to 30th place globally
  • Average page load time (broadband) increased to 2100 ms from the previous quarter's 2466 ms
  • Average page load time (mobile) was 5576ms, a large increase from the previous quarter's 2859 ms

“This is a considerable improvement on the speeds New Zealanders are enjoying every day. To put these speeds into context, in 2008 the average speed was 2.7 Mbps. The latest figures from early 2016 show an almost four-time increase as New Zealanders embrace connectivity fuelled by the Government’s Ultra-Fast Broadband and Rural Broadband Initiative programmes,” says Amy Adams, Communications Minister of New Zealand.

Global statistics from Q1 2016

  • Global average connection speed grew 12% to 6.3 Mbps, representing 23% YoY growth
  • Global average peak connection speed grew 6.8% to 34.7 Mbps, 14% YoY growth
  • Belgium leads the way in IPv6 adoption, with 36% of connections, but still decreasing 3.1%
  • Average mobile connection speeds varied by region: 27.9 Mbps in the UK, compared to 2.2 Mbps in Algeria
