Hitachi accelerates enterprise AI adoption with Red Hat platform

Today

Hitachi has implemented Red Hat OpenShift AI as the foundation of its internal artificial intelligence platform in a move to expand AI capabilities across its enterprise operations.

The deployment of Red Hat OpenShift AI serves as the backbone for Hitachi's ongoing digital transformation, enabling the global manufacturing and digital innovation company to run generative and predictive AI models at scale across its hybrid cloud infrastructure.

According to Red Hat, the internal AI platform is being utilised for more than 250 active projects spanning both informational technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) domains. The company reports that since implementing the platform, it has experienced tangible operational improvements such as enhanced call centre efficiency, faster development of vital systems, and stronger collaboration across business units.

The AI platform not only supports a wide range of workloads; it also operates as a governance framework aimed at ensuring ethical and efficient use of AI throughout the multinational organisation. Red Hat states that the platform's role as a governance tool is integral to scaling the use of AI responsibly in large enterprises.

Currently focused on supporting Hitachi's internal operations, the platform's demonstrated effectiveness is laying the groundwork for potential expansion beyond the company's own ecosystem. Hitachi is now exploring the possibility of applying Red Hat OpenShift AI externally as part of its broader business development strategy.

Miho Miura, Vice President, Area Sales, Red Hat, highlighted the significance of the partnership, stating, "Hitachi's AI platform is an example of how enterprise organisations can scale artificial intelligence to widen the scope of their mission. By building on Red Hat OpenShift AI, Hitachi has not only operationalised AI across its own business units, but set a new standard for governance and cross-functional innovation. We're proud to be a partner in their transformation and excited about the potential this platform holds — not just for Hitachi, but for the future of industry-wide AI adoption."

Masahiro Kikuchi, Director, Platform Service Department, Managed & Platform Services Business Division, Hitachi, also underscored the enterprise-wide integration of AI, saying, "Hitachi isn't simply experimenting with AI–we're industrialising it. The success of our internal platform and integrating AI tools like Red Hat OpenShift AI into our daily operations exemplifies how we're making AI the heart of our business, from call centers to large-scale system development. With Red Hat OpenShift AI, we were able to achieve this level of growth."

Red Hat OpenShift AI is designed to build, train, deploy, and monitor AI models across multiple environments, including different cloud providers and hardware accelerators. This aligns with Red Hat's stated vision of supporting "any model, any accelerator, any cloud" to enable organisations to leverage artificial intelligence without being limited by underlying infrastructure choices or escalating costs.

Red Hat argues that to fully realise the advantages of generative AI investments, companies need access to a universal inference platform that promotes seamless and high-performance AI innovation. The collaboration with Hitachi is positioned within this context as an example of how large enterprises can deploy standardised, scalable AI frameworks to achieve operational and strategic goals.

Hitachi operates worldwide across Digital Systems & Services, Energy, Mobility, and Connective Industries, with over 280,000 employees. For its fiscal year ending March 2025, Hitachi reported revenues of JPY ¥9,783.3 billion. The company indicates that the integration of AI into its systems, enabled by Red Hat OpenShift AI, has become a central factor in its ongoing business evolution.
