How audiobooks help rewire your brain in ten seconds
What's the most transformative piece of tech in your life? When we think about tech, we often picture screens, apps and devices designed to grab our attention. But what if the most powerful tech isn't flashy or complex - and isn't something you look at, but something you listen to.
Audiobooks.
As a lifelong lover of books, I never imagined that anything - let alone tech - could replace my passion for reading. But audiobooks have been my lifeline for years, carrying me through some genuinely tough times in my life. Whether it was navigating grief, parenting, business or simply diving into a fascinating topic, my audiobooks were there, just a tap away on my phone.
As a working mum of three, audiobooks allowed me to learn, feel supported and stay inspired, whether I was driving, walking, cooking, or just doing life. They made personal growth fit into my day, without the need to carve out extra time.
Which is exactly why, when it came time to share my own ideas with the world, an audiobook was the obvious choice. Audible became a powerful platform to deliver my ideas and instantly connect with millions of listeners wherever they were. I could share my insights in a format that busy people could use - while travelling to work, at the gym, folding the laundry or walking the dog - without asking for extra time.
Most tech pulls your attention onto a screen. Audiobooks do the opposite - they slip into your day seamlessly while you're living it. And here is the surprising benefit.
They are one of the most accessible tech tools we have, and they meet you exactly where you are, at the precise moment you need them. Feeling overwhelmed? Having a confidence crisis? Stuck in business? Mind racing after conflict? Audiobooks are a quick way to reset your mind, improve your mood, learn a new perspective, and gain clarity.
The impact is transformative. Take self-doubt, for example.
Millions of books have been written about it, yet we still have it. Even the leaders we admire most aren't immune to self-doubt. I guarantee you, that little voice in their head still asks, "What if I'm not good enough?" And during two decades as a lawyer and mediator, I knew that voice well, because it was mine too.
My journey led me to becoming a Brain-Based Coach, a specialisation grounded in neuroscience and behavioural change. It focuses on how the brain works and helps people break old habits that run on autopilot. The aim is simple: to give people tiny, repeatable tools they can use in real moments to build confidence, productivity and new habits that stick.
That's when I realised something important: most of these struggles, whether it's self-doubt, procrastination, or overwhelm, aren't about needing more knowledge. They're brain habits, reflexes wired into autopilot.
And brain habits require a different strategy. Our brains run fast, so the tool has to be fast enough to interrupt them - something small you can use in the exact moment the thought hits, before it takes over. It's not about "getting rid" of these habits forever. What helps is a quick, practical, 10-second reset in the moment it shows up. Change happens through repetition. One 10-second reset, then another.
Once I saw that, I started applying the same idea everywhere - overwhelm, overthinking, procrastination, setting boundaries and staying motivated. They're different problems, but they all follow the same pattern: autopilot. They all start with a single thought. And once you interrupt that thought with a 10 -second reset, you take back control. Over time, those small 10-second resets add up and rewire your brain.
I needed to get this 10-second tool into people's real lives, in real time. And the most practical delivery was the tech already in everyone's pocket. Audiobooks. Often, even five minutes of listening to the right book at the right time is enough to break the cycle, reset your brain and shift your next choice.
And there's something else about audiobooks that makes them so powerful: they create a sense of connection. Hearing the author's voice, their tone, their pauses - it feels as if they're right there in the room with you, sharing their story or guiding you through a challenge. That connection makes the experience deeply personal and impactful, as if the author is speaking directly to you.
That's why I created the 10-Second Coach as an audiobook. It's not just a book - it's a tool you can use in the exact moment you need it, to take back control and start rewiring your brain…ten seconds at a time.
10 Second Coach is available to listen to exclusively on Audible now.
