IBM completes major upgrade for AUT

IBM has completed the first phase in its new five-year IT network services contract with Auckland University of Technology.

The result of a competitive tender, the deal involves a shift from the previous leasing arrangement - also provided by IBM - to an ownership model, including a full Cisco solution for core networks, border routers and data centers, as well as networking management.

The upgrade was undertaken in preparation for the opening of AUT’s new Learning Precinct, due to take place in March 2013.

Roger Wanless, network and internet manager for AUT, says replacing core networks is not something the University does lightly, or often.

"IBM and Cisco were winners in the RFP for their financial and technology proposition and deep technical skills,” Wanless says.

IBM will now undertake a range of specialist Cisco-certified implementations, as well as providing support services and training for AUT staff, and network performance monitoring from its Highbrook data center.

Andrew Stevens-Clark, business manager, Technical Support Services for IBM,says he looks forward to helping the University’s internal team maximise their return on the hefty investment.
