Internet traffic to multiply sevenfold by 2015

FYI, this story is more than a year old

Update: The Economist has a nice graph to visualise this, broken down country by country. Kiwis look set for a big jump, too.

According to a recent Informa Telecom report, users will up- and download 1.2 million petabytes of data per year by 2015, around seven times more than in 2010.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the report predicts video will experience the most significant growth due to the popularity of video streaming services, and will account for over half of all internet traffic by 2015. Interestingly, it notes online storage and back-up services such as Rapidshare and Dropbox will also experience considerable growth.

Another unsurprising assertion is that Asia will be the larger region in terms of traffic - outpacing even the US. Asia Pacific’s share is predicted to increase to 42 percent of global internet traffic by virtue of the sheer growth in population the region will see.

"This [trend in APAC growth] will only become pronounced over the next few years, as the region’s internet penetration grows", Informa senior analyst Giles Cottle.

And China, obviously, will play a major role in fuelling this growth. "In China alone, Informa predicts that there will be 670 million internet users in the market in 2015; even if many of these users are not high-volume users, they will still collectively produce a huge amount of traffic," said Cottle.
