IWD 2025: Breaking Barriers: My Transition to Tech

Yesterday

From Corporate Services to Tech: A Bold Leap

"There is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish." – Michelle Obama

Five years ago, if someone had told me I would transition from managing large-scale corporate contracts to working in tech, I wouldn't have believed them. My background was deeply rooted in business development, contract negotiation, and account management. Yet, today, I proudly celebrate International Women's Day as part of the ever-evolving tech community.
So, what led me to take the leap?

Relocating back to my native West Cork in Ireland gave me the chance to reassess my career. While I valued my past experiences, I was seeking something more—something that would challenge me, allow me to grow, and offer flexibility without sacrificing career progression. Technology became that opportunity. It was an industry brimming with innovation, problem-solving, and forward-thinking people, and I wanted to be part of it.

The Key to Transitioning: Embracing Change and Transferable Skills

One of the most powerful lessons I learned during this transition is that career changes are possible at any stage. The skills we develop—whether in sales, negotiation, project management, or communication—are invaluable, no matter the industry. My previous experience in navigating complex business relationships turned out to be just as relevant in tech as in corporate services.

For anyone considering a career switch, my advice is simple: believe in yourself. Take the time to find an opportunity that aligns with your strengths and values. The tech industry thrives on diverse perspectives and experiences. It is a space where problem-solving, adaptability, and fresh ideas are deeply valued, making it an exciting and rewarding field for women stepping in from other industries.

Finding My Place in Tech

When I stepped into my current role in VyOS, I found an environment where my experience in customer relationships and strategic problem-solving was not only welcomed but valued. Working in tech has shown me that career growth is not always linear, and sometimes, the best opportunities come from taking bold steps outside our comfort zones. I'm fortunate to be in a workplace that fosters learning and collaboration, where talented professionals come together to make a real impact.

Celebrating Women in Tech

This International Women's Day, I celebrate not only my own journey but also the incredible women forging their paths in technology specially IT/Networking area. To those considering a transition—embrace the challenge, leverage your strengths, and seek out an environment that empowers you. The right opportunity is out there, and when you find it, the possibilities are endless.

Technology needs more voices, more perspectives, and more fearless women ready to shape the future. If you've ever thought about making a change, let this be the sign you've been waiting for. The best time to start is now.
