New Zealand will have a say in the first revision of the International Telecommunications Regulation, sending five delegates to Dubai to discuss the issue.

As reported in CommsDay this morning, the meeting will be the first potential change in 24 years, with a further 1400 delegates from all corners of the world meeting in Dubai to discuss the possibility of new regulations.

Spanning 11 days, the World Conference on International Telecommunications will consider proposed revisions ranging into hundreds of pages, as personal interests of countries threaten to turn the conference into a stalemate.

According to CommsDay, New Zealand will be represented by members of the NZ Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Employment, NZ Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Internet NZ.

With tensions expected over political disagreements between the U.S., Western Europe and Asia, against Africa, Arab states and Russia on the other, experts predict the world will effectively break into two on Internet regulation.

With an agreement on a new treaty unlikely given U.S. resistance against Russian plans, it remains unseen whether the conference will produce any clear proposals after the 11 days.
