Lodestone Energy has secured firm investor commitments for its initial public offering, paving the way for one of the first major new listings on New Zealand's stock market in about five years.

The renewable electricity generation and retail company is due to list on the NZX, broadening its shareholder base through new institutional and retail investors, alongside further backing from existing shareholders.

Established in 2019, Lodestone operates in solar generation and electricity retail. It develops, owns and runs utility-scale solar farms, and sells electricity directly to commercial, business and residential customers.

Lodestone now has five operating solar farms, a sixth under construction and a wider development pipeline. The listing is intended to support the next stage of its development as it expands its generation assets and retail business.

Market return

The transaction stands out in a domestic market that has seen limited initial public offering activity in recent years. A successful float of meaningful size is likely to be watched closely for signs of renewed appetite for new equity issues in New Zealand.

For Lodestone, the offering marks a transition from a newer solar developer to a more established participant in renewable electricity generation and retail. Its model combines ownership of generation assets with direct customer relationships through its retail arm.

That approach places Lodestone in a segment of the electricity market that spans both supply and end-customer sales. It also gives the company exposure to revenue from power generation while building a customer base in the retail market.

Expansion plans

New Zealand's growing electricity demand has become a central theme for renewable developers, retailers and investors. Increased electrification across the economy is expected to require additional generation capacity, creating opportunities for companies with operating assets and projects under development.

Lodestone has presented its solar portfolio and retail growth as the basis for further expansion, arguing that the combination of renewable generation and direct customer sales gives it a distinct model in the market.

Managing Director and Founder Gary Holden outlined the significance of the offer for both the company and the wider market.

"This is an important milestone for Lodestone and for New Zealand's capital markets. Bringing a significant new company to the NZX after a prolonged period of limited IPO activity is a positive development for the market.

"Lodestone enters this next phase with an established track record, operating generation assets, a differentiated business model and a clear pathway for continued expansion.

"The company's ability to combine renewable generation with direct customer relationships provides an important competitive advantage and creates opportunities to deliver long-term value for both customers and shareholders.

"New Zealand's increasing electricity requirements provide a compelling opportunity for further renewable generation investment," Holden said.

He also linked the fundraising to the company's next stage of development.

"Lodestone is well positioned to contribute to meeting that demand through the continued development of its solar generation portfolio, supported by the expansion of its electricity retail business.

"The successful IPO provides a strong foundation for the company's next stage of growth, and we look forward to welcoming our new shareholders next week," Holden said.
