Matthew Guarini appointed to lead TBM Council’s tech updates

Wed, 11th Sep 2024

The Technology Business Management (TBM) Council, a nonprofit organisation focused on advancing the discipline of TBM, has announced the appointment of Matthew Guarini as its new Executive Director.

The council revealed this development recently as it seeks to modernise and update its core standards significantly.

Matthew Guarini brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously served as Vice President and Senior Research Director for Forrester Research's Technology Executive Service. In his new position, Guarini will support the council's strategy, finances, and operations while steering significant updates in TBM standards.

Guarini's primary responsibility will be leading the modernisation efforts of TBM through substantial updates. These efforts include the introduction of an entirely new Framework 2.0. This framework aims to position TBM as a unifying standard for technology value management, enabling organisations to understand trade-offs between performance, risk, sustainability, and costs. Additionally, a significant 5.0 update to the TBM Taxonomy will occur, adding support for cost modelling in Generative AI (GenAI) solutions and improving visibility for both on-premises and cloud costs.

These comprehensive updates are geared towards helping organisations optimise for value across intricate hybrid cloud environments, estimate returns on investment (ROI), and develop fully burdened investment models. This initiative aims to enable businesses to better realise value from AI investments – an area the industry increasingly seeks solutions for.

In expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, Guarini said, "The speed of innovation in technology is forcing companies to be more agile and strategic when it comes to their technology investments and how they bring value to the organisation as a whole. I am looking forward to joining an industry-leading organisation at the precipice of reshaping TBM to best align with the goals of businesses across industries as they continue to navigate the complexities of the evolving technology landscape."

Ajay Patel, General Manager at Apptio, an IBM Company, highlighted Guarini's leadership qualities. Patel commented, "Matthew is known for his energetic leadership style that can rally teams effectively toward a shared goal. His passion for TBM really comes through when you talk with him, and it's clear he will be a powerful voice for the future of technology management and how it can add strategic value for businesses in all industries."

The TBM Council aims to connect business value to technology investments by providing finance, technology, and business leaders with comprehensive visibility, benchmarking, optimisation, billing, and planning of their investments, irrespective of their technology stack, delivery, or development model. The council offers best practices enabling leaders to react swiftly to changing market dynamics and to optimise cloud and agile strategies to meet business objectives.

With Guarini at the helm, the TBM Council is preparing to embark on a series of updates and strategies designed to advance the TBM discipline, offering a robust framework for technology executives and practitioners to navigate and benefit from the complexities of modern technological investments.
