Meridian Energy upgrades finance with unified Oracle Fusion Cloud

Tue, 9th Sep 2025

DXC Technology has completed the implementation of a unified Oracle Fusion Cloud ERP and EPM system for Meridian Energy, aiming to modernise the New Zealand power company's financial operations.

The project, which involved replacing Meridian Energy's outdated and highly customised financial system, saw the deployment of cloud-based technology to unify key business processes. Meridian Energy, which is responsible for generating approximately one third of New Zealand's electricity supply solely from renewable resources, supplies more than 400,000 residential and business customers.

Finance system overhaul

Prior to the transition, Meridian Energy operated on a legacy financial system that had been heavily customised over time, resulting in inefficient processes and a lack of standardisation across financial, procurement and planning functions. The objective for the upgrade was to optimise business operations, provide a more seamless experience for finance teams, and enable greater project planning and visibility.

With the new system, executive and board-level financial reports and briefing books are now generated within five days, streamlining management oversight and strategic decision-making. More than 200 managers now have access to enhanced project planning and monitoring tools, which is expected to drive improved operational outcomes.

Operational efficiency and compliance

One of the key changes Meridian Energy has adopted is the enforcement of a standardised procurement process, implementing a "no purchase order, no payment" policy. This has strengthened procurement compliance and improved supplier onboarding processes, introducing best practices across the business.

The platform provides a modern software-as-a-service (SaaS) foundation, integrating data and automating key business processes. This transition aims to position Meridian for future growth and provide the resilience required to adapt to evolving business models in the energy sector.

"We're investing in technology to help us stay ahead of the growing demand for electricity, and help our customers reduce their emissions. It's one way we're doing our part to ensure New Zealand has all the advantages of a green economy, fuelled by renewable energy," said Mike Roan, Meridian Energy Chief Executive.

Roan also highlighted the value of operational visibility and process improvements delivered by the new platform. "DXC has successfully delivered a unified SaaS platform which allows us to manage and monitor projects across the business, consolidate data for planning and analysis, and drive automation and productivity. These are critical capabilities for our future."

Supporting renewable goals

Meridian Energy's focus on technology investment aligns with New Zealand's ambition for a net-zero carbon future. The power company generates electricity solely from renewable sources – wind, water and solar – and the modernised finance system is expected to support the company's continued evolution and ability to help customers reduce emissions.

The partnership forms part of a broader effort to ensure energy providers can meet increased demand, manage supply fluctuations, and comply with the sector's regulatory changes while supporting environmental goals.

"At DXC, we are committed to helping customers maximise the value of their technology investments," said Seelan Nayagam, President, Asia Pacific, Middle East & Africa, DXC Technology. "By transforming Meridian Energy's legacy systems, our aim is to support their vision to help New Zealand achieve a net-zero carbon future. We look forward to a sustained partnership and creating future opportunities, as Meridian continues to grow."

Wider context

The project is part of a broader trend within the global energy sector, where companies are replacing legacy IT infrastructure in order to respond to a rapidly changing landscape marked by decarbonisation efforts, distributed energy resources, and rising customer expectations. Modern IT solutions such as Oracle Fusion Cloud are intended to strengthen integration, ensure data reliability, and support innovation, allowing utilities to remain competitive and better serve both business and residential customers.

DXC Technology has stated it works with energy companies worldwide to manage and modernise mission-critical systems, aiming to help clients evolve with new digital capabilities while maintaining productivity, reducing downtime, and unlocking new revenue streams.
