Microsoft, Cloudian partnership offers data center flexibility

By Zach Thompson
Thu 26 May 2022

Cloudian’s HyperStore object storage platform is now integrated and validated to work with Microsoft SQ Server 2022, offering more flexible and scalable data centers.

Microsoft SQL Server 2022 is a relational database management system that supports a broad range of transaction processing, business intelligence and analytics applications.

Integrating the companies’ offerings will mean Microsoft SQL Server 2022 customers can benefit from the public cloud-like scalability and flexibility that Cloudian offers its own data center customers.

This comes after Microsoft invited Cloudian to participate in its Early Adopter Program, conducting validation testing to ensure seamless integration with SQL Server.

The successful results mean Cloudian is now part of Microsoft SQL Server’s newly announced public preview.

Cloudian notes that organisations are increasingly looking to get more significant insights from their local data by running SQL data analytics applications on-premises, meaning that they need a modern storage foundation that can support these applications.

The company’s HyperStore offers fully-native S3 compatibility, limitless scalability and security, such as data immutability for protecting against ransomware, providing the necessary foundation.

In addition, it offers advanced metadata tagging, allowing for faster data searches and enabling AI, machine learning and analytics applications.

“Today’s announcement again highlights Cloudian’s leadership in hybrid cloud data management,” Cloudian chief marketing officer Jon Toor says.

“We were honoured that Microsoft invited us to participate in its Early Adopter Program and now look forward to helping more customers leverage the combined solution to extract greater value and insights from their on-prem data.”

Combining HyperStore and Microsoft SQL Server creates and deploys analytical queries for complex applications in cybersecurity, predictive maintenance, risk management and many other areas.

It addresses three main use cases, including staging files for loading, storing database backups, and enabling federated queries using data stored with HyperStore.

Further, the products support data professionals and their testing of diverse models in parallel on multi-structured data sets, including machine learning.

“Our customers have vast data stores on-premises, and they want a storage infrastructure that enables them to run their SQL analytics applications with the same ease and flexibility they would in Microsoft Azure,” Microsoft Azure Database Services product manager director Asad Khan says.

“Cloudian’s HyperStore object storage was architected from the start to provide a seamless, cloud-like experience in organisations’ own data centers, providing a robust storage solution for our SQL Server 2022 users.”

This integration comes after various other collaborations the data management provider has secured, such as with WEKA, VMware, AWS Outpost, Veeam and Red Hat.

Cloudian also launched its HyperCare remote managed service and Support Plus advanced monitoring.

The company’s Oceania, A/NZ, and ASEAN director James Wright said these updates would help companies in the region deal with unprecedented IT skills and talent shortages.

“That means they’re struggling to manage today’s data-driven demands, including dealing with the increased burden of managing it all,” Wright says.

“HyperCare enables IT teams to leverage our storage expertise, freeing them to focus higher up the stack on applications and drive business value, all while keeping their digital assets on-premises and within their control, an important consideration as A/NZ’s spotlight on data sovereignty becomes brighter.

“In addition, along with our new Support Plus service, HyperCare enables our reseller partners to offer customers a broader range of service tiers based on their support needs.”
