New rideshare app Carpoolin launched in New Zealand

Today

Saveun Man has launched a new rideshare app named Carpoolin that aims to address New Zealand's congested commutes.

The app seeks to improve daily travel by connecting commuters who travel along similar routes. Carpoolin's focus is on affordability, environmental sustainability, and building a sense of community among users.

Carpoolin is intended to help businesses across New Zealand meet sustainability targets. By encouraging shared commutes, the app helps organisations reduce parking issues and emissions while promoting employee wellness.

Amid rising petrol prices and temporary public transportation changes in Auckland, Carpoolin stands as an alternative for residents in need of cost-efficient and reliable transportation options.

The creation of Carpoolin emerges from Saveun Man's personal and professional journey. Growing up in Upper Hutt, Wellington, Saveun was raised in an environment rich in creativity and understanding of mechanics and design, alongside his three brothers.

"We were the only Cambodians in the area," Saveun recalls, touching on his family's journey from Cambodia and their quick assimilation into the local culture.

While his brothers explored careers in art, design, and engineering, Saveun developed a particular interest in computers during his time working at McDonald's, where he first dabbled in digital innovation.

After completing digital media courses at Natcoll and Media Design School, Saveun spent 14 years with Grinding Gear Games, contributing to the success of Path of Exile. "But I always had ideas for my own apps and video games along the way," he notes.

The COVID-19 pandemic marked a turning point in Saveun's career. The birth of his daughter inspired a reevaluation of his professional and personal aspirations. His daily commute to Rosedale became the catalyst for the conception of Carpoolin.

"I spent at least 30 minutes each way in traffic, seeing the same cars and people, thinking about how inefficient it was," Saveun states. Recognising the challenges within Auckland's transport infrastructure, he sought a practical solution.

Carpoolin was developed to alleviate traffic congestion and promote community connections. "The app aligns with my values," Saveun explains. "It's about tapping into the power of community while helping people connect on a personal level—something I think is missing these days."

Among the key features of Carpoolin are scheduled trips, allowing users to plan seamless departures and returns, community connections for fostering friendships, and a focus on safety and comfort with detailed driver and passenger profiles. Additionally, the app promotes environmental benefits by supporting shared rides to reduce emissions.

Saveun emphasises the app's mission: "Our goal with Carpoolin is to make daily commutes cheaper, greener, and more enjoyable by connecting locals heading in the same direction. We believe this can significantly reduce our collective carbon footprint while fostering meaningful community connections."

Carpoolin is freely accessible and is available for download on the App Store and Google Play. It positions itself as a practical solution for commuters aiming to contribute positively to both the environment and local communities.
