Northern Trust has launched application programming interfaces for its banking services, with NAV Fund Services the first client to put the system into production.

The new interfaces give institutional banking clients in Northern Trust's asset servicing business direct access to banking data and payment functions. They are designed to let clients pull information into their own workflows in real time, rather than rely on manual processes or batch files.

The rollout covers payment instructions, intraday and end-of-day reporting on account balances and activity, real-time credit, debit and balance confirmations, and data delivery in standard industry formats.

For clients, the change is intended to bring treasury and cash information closer to their internal systems. Fund administrators and other institutional users can reconcile cash positions and transaction flows without waiting for scheduled file transfers.

NAV Fund Services worked with Northern Trust to develop and refine the API offering, becoming the first user to adopt it in a live environment. Technology teams from both firms tested the service across a range of transaction types and fund administration scenarios.

These included balance and transaction reporting, cash management and data delivery. NAV said it built the integration layer needed to connect Northern Trust's banking APIs to its platform in real time.

Client integration

The project reflects a broader shift in financial services infrastructure, as banks and service providers open core systems through APIs so clients can consume data directly. In fund administration, that trend has been driven by demand for faster reconciliation, greater control over cash movements and fewer manual handoffs between systems.

The API service supports straight-through processing and improved visibility of cash positions. It is also intended to reduce the need for manual intervention in routine reporting and payment-related tasks.

Peter Lantero, Head of Banking & Treasury Services at Northern Trust, said the launch reflected the bank's commitment to innovation and digital leadership.

"These capabilities allow clients to integrate closely with Northern Trust for real-time balance and transaction information, supporting the complex needs of clients as their operating models continue to evolve," Lantero said.

First adopter

NAV operates as an independent fund administrator serving alternative asset fund managers. The firm said timely, automated access to banking data is a core operational requirement, particularly when clients need up-to-date views of balances and transactions across multiple funds and structures.

The company has more than 3,300 staff and services more than 2,550 funds globally, with total assets under administration of USD $450 billion. Its footprint includes operations in the US, India, Australia, the Cayman Islands, Ireland, Mauritius, the Philippines and Singapore.

Ravi Gupta, Chief Strategic Solutions Officer at NAV Fund Services, said connecting the two firms' systems required extensive technical collaboration.

"As a fund administrator, timely and automated access to banking data is critical to supporting our clients and our operations," Gupta said.

"Bringing real-time banking data into fund administration at this level required highly technical collaboration between our teams. We worked through a wide range of transaction types and real-world scenarios to test and finalize the launch, and we're continuing to extend the capabilities. The resulting API interfaces eliminate the delays of batch processing and file dependencies and advance how we service our clients."

Banking push

For Northern Trust, the launch adds another digital access channel to its institutional banking offering for asset servicing clients. Clients can use the interfaces for on-demand data delivery as well as payment-related messaging, allowing information to move directly between Northern Trust and client systems.

The group is a major provider of wealth management, asset servicing, asset management and banking services. It reports USD $20.0 trillion in assets under custody or administration and USD $2.0 trillion in assets under management.

The implementation with NAV focused on practical fund administration workflows rather than a limited pilot, covering real-time reporting, cash management and transaction handling in production.
