Panzura partners with IBM to enhance data archiving solutions

Tue, 8th Apr 2025

Panzura has announced the integration of its Symphony data services platform with IBM Storage Deep Archive on the IBM Diamondback tape library, aimed at offering secure, low-cost, and automated data archiving solutions.

The integration is designed to address the challenges associated with managing large quantities of cold data, while ensuring security, regulatory compliance, and cost-efficiency. By combining Panzura Symphony's data management capabilities with IBM Storage Deep Archive's on-premises solution, enterprises can enhance their data archiving process and potentially reduce storage costs.

Panzura's existing collaboration with IBM's portfolio is expanded through this integration. In addition to IBM Storage Deep Archive, Symphony's data movement framework integrates with IBM Fusion Data Catalog. This creates an expansive data fabric for metadata ingestion and offers enhanced data insight capabilities. Symphony also provides content inspection capabilities, which can locate Personally Identifiable Information (PII) and other sensitive data.

The integration adds value to IBM Storage Fusion by simplifying and accelerating data and application management within Red Hat OpenShift environments, further showcasing the potential of the Panzura and IBM partnership.

Sundar Kanthadai, Chief Technology Officer at Panzura, stated, "Panzura and IBM continue to deliver significant benefits to customers, as evidenced by our latest integration with IBM Storage Deep Archive. The Panzura and IBM solution addresses surging cold data volumes and escalating cloud fees by combining smart data management with ultra-low-cost on-premises storage, all within a compact footprint."

IBM Storage Deep Archive offers a secure, durable on-premises solution for data archiving and online backup, featuring a highly encrypted storage environment. Symphony provides a unified interface for managing data across various cloud environments, enhancing data accessibility and decision-making capabilities, particularly in AI and machine learning applications that require access to large datasets.

The integrated solution is particularly relevant for sectors like life sciences, financial services, and energy. These industries can leverage archival data for new insights and innovations, facilitated by the AI-ready accessibility of cold storage data. IBM Storage Deep Archive simplifies tape integration and optimises costs by offering storage at significantly lower prices than other services, without any recall fees.

Panzura Symphony supports this process by automating the data lifecycle and utilising S3 Glacier Flexible Retrieval storage classes to manage the transfer of data to tape. The IBM Deep Archive on Diamondback tape library provides expansive storage capabilities, accommodating up to 27 PB of data.

Key benefits include considerably reduced energy consumption and enhanced security due to the combination of Symphony's security features and IBM's encrypted, air-gapped storage.

"Symphony support for IBM Storage Deep Archive delivers a masterclass in efficiency, offering performance and security while addressing the escalating costs of cloud storage for massive datasets. This integration allows technologists to escape the trap of unpredictable access fees and egress sticker shock," noted Mike Harvey, Senior Vice President of Products at Panzura.

Panzura Symphony also provides a searchable catalog system to manage and retrieve data, thanks to its capability to classify data and extract metadata. This catalog is accessible via APIs and JDBC, allowing for automated policy-driven actions such as recall and deletion. This metadata-driven approach ensures optimal storage utilisation and adheres to compliance requirements.

The combined solution of Panzura Symphony and IBM Storage Deep Archive aims to offer a comprehensive framework for effective data management in a cost-efficient manner and is now available for enterprise use.
