Percona launches Everest, a cloud-native open-source DBaaS platform

Fri, 20th Sep 2024

Percona has announced the general availability of its new database platform, Percona Everest.

Designed to be a cloud-native, open-source alternative to traditional Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS) offerings, the platform aims to eliminate issues such as vendor lock-in while providing automated provisioning and management of multiple databases through a unified interface.

The platform supports MySQL, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB, allowing standardisation of database deployment across various clouds and environments.

Ann Schlemmer, CEO at Percona, stated, "Percona Everest represents a paradigm shift in the management of cloud-native databases on Kubernetes."

She added, "After several years of significant growth in the public DBaaS market, organisations are pushing back against public DBaaS solutions that actively cultivate lock-in, limiting flexibility and driving up costs for customers. We developed Percona Everest to counter these issues, providing our customers with the conveniences of the leading public DBaaS offerings but without the limitations."

The issue of hidden costs associated with popular DBaaS offerings is one of the driving factors behind the development of Percona Everest. Traditional DBaaS solutions often result in vendor lock-in, making it difficult for customers to manage data access, database configurations, and cloud costs. Unlike these offerings, Percona Everest allows self-serve provisioning and management of open-source database clusters on Kubernetes using the infrastructure controlled by the user. Thus, users maintain control over data access, database configuration, and associated costs.

Percona Everest extends the benefits of platform engineering to database provisioning and management. It offers multi-database support, including MySQL, MongoDB, and PostgreSQL, within a single platform. It also supports Kubernetes-based deployments, which allows for both development environments and databases to be managed and provisioned automatically, thereby simplifying and accelerating application development.

In addition, the platform facilitates multi-cloud and on-premises deployments, including OpenShift, ensuring high availability, data sovereignty, and redundancy. Private and custom deployments maintain the privacy and security of the database environment, allowing customisation of various aspects of the database setup. The intuitive user interface simplifies administrative tasks such as managing storage locations, monitoring endpoints, and storage classes.

Key features of Percona Everest also include comprehensive monitoring through the integrated Percona Monitoring and Management (PMM) tool, Single Sign-On (SSO) integration for centralising user authentication, and disaster recovery tools to maintain business continuity. Enterprises can opt to manage the platform independently or receive support from Percona's team of database performance experts.

Early adopters of Percona Everest have reported positive outcomes. Handoyo Sutanto, CEO and Co-Founder of Lyrid, remarked, "In designing our DBaaS service for customers, we knew that companies would want the benefits of technologies like Kubernetes and cloud-native services while avoiding the costly and extremely challenging aspects of running this themselves. With Percona Everest, we have built a fully managed, flexible database service for our customers which we can provide without the levels of lock-in and expense associated with other cloud providers."

Gifford Holmquist from Samaritan's Purse commented, "We migrated to Percona Everest from the Public Cloud in order to control our own data, reduce costs, and avoid vendor lock-in wherever possible. We've met each of these objectives, and we're very happy with the move. It's been a very successful decision."
