Revolut launches eSims in NZ for cost effective global data use

Yesterday

Revolut has become the first financial institution in New Zealand to offer eSIMs and global data plans to its customers.

This new service allows Revolut customers with eSIM-compatible devices to access data plans in over 100 countries at half the usual cost charged by regular telecommunications providers. The system is fully digital, enabling users to install the eSIM through the Revolut app and top up their data plans with just a few clicks. Additionally, customers can use the eSIM alongside a physical SIM, offering the flexibility to switch networks without incurring roaming charges.

Importantly, the eSIM connection enables customers to operate the Revolut app without using their mobile data allowance. If a customer arrives in a country with no existing data or WiFi access, they can still manage their Revolut account and services, including data top-ups, directly through the app.

In 2023, New Zealanders made approximately 2.96 million international trips. Many travellers experience high casual data rates, reportedly as much as NZD $11.50 for 200 MB in some areas, while New Zealand telecommunications companies collectively accrue around NZD $114 million annually from roaming charges.

Georgia Grange, Head of Revolut New Zealand, commented: "At Revolut, our mission is to simplify life for Kiwis. We utilise cutting-edge technology to enhance our customers' experiences, and our eSIM is a prime example of this innovation. It offers seamless access to mobile data, eliminating the frustrations associated with high roaming charges and the hassle of managing a physical SIM card. Wherever Kiwis travel, they can effortlessly secure a data plan with just a few taps on their phone, allowing them to instantly share stunning photos from their adventures with friends and family. This solution is a game-changer for those who love to explore internationally, providing a convenient and cost-effective way to stay connected while on the go."

Hakan Koç, founder and CEO of 1GLOBAL, also remarked: "By joining forces, Revolut can leverage 1GLOBAL's worldwide mobile network and market leading eSIM platform to enhance their own international technological infrastructure. 1GLOBAL provides quick and secure mobile network connectivity in over 160 countries worldwide. Our eSIM technology integrates seamlessly into the existing Revolut app and can be installed on any eSIM-compatible mobile device in less than a minute."

The introduction of eSIM ensures that travellers using Revolut are supported throughout their journey, from start to finish, without needing to worry about excessive roaming charges.
