FYI, this story is more than a year old

Bitdefender has launched the free 60-Second Virus Scanner desktop app, adding a layer of cloud-based protection to PCs worldwide in what the company describes as an "all-out assault on malware."

The antivirus software provider says the scanner offers PC users the confidence of knowing their system is checked by proactive, scanning technology that will pinpoint active threats.

“With the 60-Second Virus Scanner, we aim to bring our top of the line technology to as many PC users around the world as possible,” says Catalin Cosoi, chief security strategist, Bitdefender.

“We’re convinced our free technology will impress PC users with its efficiency and silence.

"We expect a lot of people who use the scanner to find out that their existing antivirus solution isn’t catching everything it should.”

Working in conjunction with any antivirus software, the scanner allows PC users to double-check whether their existing security software is doing its job.

Bitdefender says the software works silently, guarding systems in the background while users work or play, and sending real-time alerts as a threat appears.
