Tech Data wins Microsoft Frontier Distributor status

Thu, 2nd Apr 2026

Tech Data has received Microsoft's Global Frontier Distributor designation, placing it among an early group recognised under Microsoft's revised partner framework.

The designation applies to cloud solution provider distributors that meet Microsoft's standards for support, security, channel enablement, platform development and technical delivery. In Asia Pacific and Japan, the recognition reflects Tech Data's role in helping partners roll out Microsoft products and services across the region.

Microsoft introduced the Frontier Distributor tier as part of an updated channel accreditation model. The programme targets distributors serving small and medium-sized businesses through reseller networks, with an emphasis on scale, consistency and support for cloud-based offerings.

For Tech Data, the recognition reinforces its position in Microsoft's distribution ecosystem at a time of growing demand for cloud services, cybersecurity tools and artificial intelligence products across the Asia Pacific. The distributor operates in more than 100 countries.

Tech Data highlighted three elements behind the designation in the region: its StreamOne cloud commerce platform, a centralised security operations service and its Channel Academy training platform. Together, these services are designed to help partners manage billing, monitor customer security posture and train staff on Microsoft products in a more standardised way.

StreamOne serves as a digital marketplace for cloud transactions, with automated billing and application programming interface integration. The platform is designed to provide resellers and customers with a single way to buy and manage Microsoft services while automating workflows.

Its security operations offering gives Microsoft customers visibility into their security posture and identifies risks and remediation opportunities. More broadly, the shift reflects how distributors are increasingly expected to provide managed support around cloud deployments rather than simply fulfil software orders.

Channel Academy, which Tech Data describes as a digital practice builder, provides training and skills development across multiple markets. The programme is intended to support more consistent delivery of Microsoft-related expertise across the Asia Pacific and Japan.

Tech Data also noted that its status as a Microsoft Designated Support Provider allows it to offer onboarding, lifecycle support and round-the-clock technical assistance from certified teams. That support structure has become more important as distributors seek to deepen their role in partner sales models and generate more recurring revenue from cloud subscriptions and related services.

Anand Chakravarthy, vice president of advanced solutions at Tech Data Asia Pacific Japan, said the recognition marked a further step in the company's relationship with Microsoft.

"We are proud of our long-standing partnership with Microsoft, and the Frontier Distributor designation is a solid recognition of the work we do together," Chakravarthy said.

He linked the announcement to regional demand for faster execution and greater automation in technology sales and deployment.

"APJ is one of the fastest-growing technology markets in the world. With massively increasing demand for speed and automation, our partners need a distributor that can keep pace; one that helps them deliver the right solutions, build their cloud practices and deliver secure outcomes for their customers. This designation strengthens our commitment to doing exactly that throughout the region," he said.

The accreditation also highlights how major distributors are moving further into service delivery, security oversight and partner training as the channel adapts to cloud-led sales. Rather than acting solely as intermediaries between software vendors and resellers, distributors are increasingly being assessed on their ability to support technical deployment, commercial automation and customer retention.

That shift is particularly visible across Asia Pacific and Japan, where cloud adoption has expanded quickly, but partner ecosystems vary widely in scale and maturity. In that environment, vendor-backed distributor designations can help determine which firms are best placed to support resellers seeking technical support, billing infrastructure and standardised enablement.

Tech Data said the designation strengthens its commitment to supporting partners across the region through secure deployment, cloud operations and Microsoft-focused training.
