US govt reveals privacy plans

Calls by The White House for a ‘Do Not Track’ option on websites has caused debate from internet companies disputing the controls.

The US government wants to give consumers greater control of their personal information to improve digital privacy online.

‘Do Not Track’ is a movement to stop corporate advertisers from tracking the behaviour of computer users with the aim of improving Internet standards.

But the move has concerned companies such as Facebook and Google, with the proposal expected to cut internet advertising, severely denting profits in the process.

Advertising groups, relying on customer data for increased revenue, argue personal information is crucial to the Internet and strongly oppose the move.

After nearly a year of talks between both sides, if no solution is reached rumours of a legislative crackdown on Internet privacy is expected to follow.
