Vodafone explains Micro-SIM card process

Mon, 19th Jul 2010
FYI, this story is more than a year old

Vodafone has begun sending out information to consumers about Micro-SIM cards ahead of the introduction of Apple’s iPhone 4 into New Zealand.

“If you are intending to snap up an iPhone 4, you'll need a new Micro-SIM which is smaller than the standard SIM Card you are probably using now,” says Kursten Shalfoon, Consumer Marketing Manager.

Here’s a short FAQ:

How do you get your hands on a Micro-SIM?

This will be available with the launch of the iPhone 4 and we'll simply give you one free when you resign or sign up to a new Vodafone On Account plan.

Can I keep my existing number with a Micro-SIM?

  • Yes, if you are an existing Vodafone customer purchasing your iPhone 4 in a Vodafone retail store, we'll be able to swap your mobile number onto your new Micro-SIM on the spot.
  • Yes, if you are purchasing your iPhone 4 through our Vodafone online shop, wait until you receive your Micro-SIM and iPhone 4. Then call 777 or visit a Vodafone store to swap your mobile number onto your new Micro-SIM.
  • Yes, if you are new to Vodafone, you don't need to do anything, your Micro-SIM will have your new mobile number already attached.
  • Yes, if you are bringing your number from another network, call 777, visit any Vodafone store or click here to find out more about mobile number portability.
The company says that once you swap your mobile number onto your new Micro-SIM, your standard SIM will be deactivated. “Make sure you have your iPhone 4 and your new Micro-SIM before you request your mobile number to be swapped,” Shalfoon adds.

Backing up your contacts from your current SIM card

  • Connect to iTunes if you are already an iPhone user
  • Visit any Vodafone retail store once you have your Micro-SIM - they then copy your contacts from your old SIM to your Micro-SIM
What's next?

We will be in contact again next week to give you more info on pricing for the iPhone 4 and when it will be available in New Zealand.

Look out for pricing details and a launch date this week, by the sounds of it. We've contacted Vodafone for confirmation.

Earlier this month Telecom revealed plans to launch its own Micro-SIM card in August, “making it even easier for XT customers to use the latest Smartphone and notebook devices”, the company said.

And in case you missed it this morning, Orcon announced its entrance to the mobile market. Full story here.
