FYI, this story is more than a year old

Internet users in Wellington enjoy the fastest speeds in Oceania, according to a survey by Akamai.

The Q3 2009 report, just released on Akamai’s website, is based on information gathered from the company's global server network. In it, Wellington claimed the top spot as the city with the fastest internet connection in New Zealand and Australia. Here’s the top ten ranked cities for Kbps:

Wellington 3488

Riverwood (Aus) 3204

Hamilton 3163

Canberra 2990

Christchurch 2886

Sydney 2660

Tasman 2653

Auckland 2637

Adelaide 2234

Brisbane 2132

According to the Akamai report the fastest city globally is Sandy, Utah (33464 Kbps) and the slowest city is Mpumalanga in South Africa (1035 Kbps).

In addition to measuring city speeds in granular detail, the Akamai report also ranked cities according to the adoption rates of high speed connectivity – that is the percentage of users with connections above 5Mbps. Wellington has the second highest adoption rate with 13% of users on high-speed connections - while another capital city, Canberra, claimed the top spot for Oceania with 19% of users with connections above 5Mbps.
