AMD has appointed Vinay Awasthi as Senior Vice President, Sales for Asia Pacific and Japan, covering one of the chipmaker's faster-growing regional markets.

Based in Singapore, Awasthi will oversee sales strategy and execution across Asia Pacific and Japan. His remit includes customer engagement, relationships with original equipment manufacturers and channel partners, and coordinating go-to-market efforts across the region's markets.

Growth focus

The appointment comes as AMD looks to expand its position across cloud, enterprise, AI, commercial and consumer segments in Asia Pacific and Japan. The region remains a key growth area as demand for computing and AI products rises.

Awasthi joins from Qualcomm, where he served as Senior Vice President and Global Head of Compute Sales. Before that, he spent 21 years at HP in a series of senior regional and global roles.

He brings more than two decades of technology sales leadership, including experience managing customers and partners across international markets. That background is likely to be central as AMD sharpens sales execution in a geographically diverse region.

Regional expansion

AMD has been building its commercial presence as competition intensifies among semiconductor companies seeking a larger share of AI and data centre spending. Asia Pacific and Japan is a significant market in that effort because of its broad base of cloud providers, device makers, enterprise customers and channel networks.

The hire is part of a broader push to deepen customer and ecosystem relationships in the region. AMD also highlighted the need for tighter alignment between local market activity and regional sales plans as it pursues further expansion.

In a statement on his appointment, Awasthi said he was joining at a pivotal time for the company and the sector.

"I am excited to join AMD at such an important moment for both the company and the industry," said Vinay Awasthi, Senior Vice President, Sales, APJ, AMD.

Leadership role

He added: "AMD's broad portfolio of computing and AI solutions creates significant opportunities across the region. I look forward to working closely with our customers, partners and teams across APJ to strengthen collaboration, align execution, and accelerate innovation and growth."

Senior sales leadership has become increasingly important for chipmakers as they try to turn strong interest in AI systems into lasting customer relationships and broader regional coverage. For AMD, Asia Pacific and Japan spans mature economies and emerging markets, requiring local execution alongside regional consistency.

AMD said Awasthi's background in global compute sales and his long experience in large technology organisations made him a strong fit for the role. His appointment also adds another senior executive in Singapore, a common base for regional technology operations covering Asia Pacific.

"We are thrilled to welcome Vinay to the team and are confident his leadership, expertise, and customer focus will drive meaningful impact across the region," said Darren Grasby, Executive Vice President and Chief Sales Officer, AMD.

Awasthi takes up the position as AMD continues to invest in sales coverage and partner relationships across Asia Pacific and Japan, aiming to support customers at scale across the region.
