FYI, this story is more than a year old

Amazon Web Services has been chosen for long-term data analytics and machine learning by global resources company BHP.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced BHP selected AWS as its long-term data analytics and machine learning cloud provider to improve business agility, make operations safer, and help the shift to a data-driven culture.

BHP says it aims to leverage the extensive range of AWS services, including analytics, machine learning, storage, and Compute, to foster innovation, accelerate the development of new services, and deploy new digital initiatives across its businesses globally.

It's important for resource companies to be flexible and able to respond to changing market demand for natural resources, and keep up with the rapid pace of technological change. By using AWS services, BHP says it can combine thousands of datasets from its global entities in order to produce useful digital solutions. As an example of this, BHP recently developed a solution on AWS using AI to optimise commodity logistics schedules from mine to market.

To train workers, BHP is launching an AWS Cloud Academy program that will offer BHP employees access to interactive training modules and hands-on immersion days. BHP says this will help foster innovation and problem-solving across the business, create a future-ready workforce, and help the company attract top digital talent.

“Digital technology is in everything we do at BHP, from how we connect every day to how we extract and find resources safely and sustainably,” says BHP chief technical officer, Laura Tyler.

“We are levering next-generation technologies like machine learning and data analytics to solve complex business problems and unlock value even faster. Cloud is the foundation of our plans, and it will enable us to deploy digital solutions to the frontline quickly and at scale, dramatically reduce the amount of hardware on sites, and reduce costs.

“We are thrilled to have AWS on board to ensure we have a strong foundation to accelerate our plans and drive digital capability across the business,” she says.

Amazon Web Services vice president of engineering, Bill Vass, says, “We're excited to expand our collaboration with BHP and support them to become a more efficient and data-driven resources company.

“With AWS, BHP can put it's vast global data to work, helping the company make the best possible decisions and better respond to market changes, while upskilling employees to prepare for the digital workforce. AWS is pleased to help BHP further drive efficiencies in their operations and set up the company for continued global success using the cloud.
