Cloud security threats surge in 2024, Check Point report reveals

Fri, 10th May 2024

The 2024 Cloud Security Report from Check Point Software Technologies highlights an urgent need for bolstered security measures against escalating cloud threats. The study reveals a considerable surge in cloud security incidents, with a significant increase from 24% in 2023 to 61% in 2024. This marks a growing complexity and frequency of threats in the digital realm.

Key highlights from the report demonstrate a substantial uptick in security incidents and heightened concerns over risk management strategies. Alarmingly, 96% of respondents expressed concerns about their ability to manage emerging cloud risks effectively. This sentiment represents a stark shift in perception compared to previous surveys, underscoring the need for innovative solutions to counteract progressively intricate threats.

Reflecting an essential strategic shift in combatting these escalating pressures, 91% of organisations now prioritise the incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance their defence mechanisms. This represents a significant lean towards adopting AI-driven technologies for proactive threat prevention, in contrast to the reactive approaches noted in earlier surveys.

However, despite the potential for streamlined solutions, complexities still persist in cloud security integration. According to the survey, 54% of respondents faced challenges in maintaining consistent regulatory standards across multi-cloud environments. Furthermore, nearly half struggled with integrating cloud services into legacy systems, often exacerbated by limited IT resources.

As a response to these looming threats, Itai Greenberg, Chief Strategy Officer at Check Point Software Technologies, suggests prioritising implementing AI-powered prevention measures for a more secure and resilient cloud environment. He believes that adopting a "consolidated security architecture and enhancing collaborative security operations" can help businesses preemptively tackle emerging threats.

Other insights from the 2024 Cloud Security Report:

Escalation of Cloud Incidents: There has been a near 40% increase in cloud security incidents compared to last year, with 61% of organisations reporting significant disruptions.

Deep Concerns Over Risk Management: An overwhelming 96% of respondents reported concerns about their ability to effectively manage cloud risks, reflecting a considerable escalation from previous years.

Rapid Adoption of AI Technologies: With 91% of organisations now prioritising AI to enhance their security posture, the focus has shifted towards leveraging AI for proactive threat prevention.

CNAPP for Enhanced Prevention: Despite the growing threat landscape, only 25% of organisations have fully implemented Cloud Native Application Protection Platforms (CNAPP). This underscores the urgent need for comprehensive solutions that go beyond traditional tooling.

Complexity in Cloud Security Integration: Despite potential for streamlined solutions, 54% of respondents face challenges in maintaining consistent regulatory standards across multi-cloud environments. Additionally, 49% struggle with integrating cloud services into legacy systems, often complicated by limited IT resources.

The report advises organisations to embrace a more comprehensive, collaborative, and AI-driven cybersecurity framework. Check Point CloudGuard offers actionable security and smarter prevention, effectively strengthening the overall security posture. CloudGuard is part of the Check Point Infinity Platform, which allows organisations to centralise and automate security processes, compliance, and rule sets, thereby enhancing visibility and control over cloud environments.
