Dell launches infrastructure upgrades to support AI data centres

Wed, 9th Apr 2025

Dell Technologies has unveiled a suite of new infrastructure innovations aimed at helping organisations accelerate their data centre modernisation efforts.

The company's updates span across server, storage, and data protection portfolios, with a focus on improving performance, efficiency, scalability and cyber resilience - particularly in the face of growing AI workloads and cyber threats.

"Modern applications require a new breed of infrastructure that will help customers keep pace with everchanging data centre demands," said Arthur Lewis, president of Infrastructure Solutions Group at Dell Technologies.

"From storage to servers to networking to data protection, only Dell Technologies provides an end-to-end disaggregated infrastructure portfolio that helps customers reduce complexity, increase IT agility and accelerate data centre modernisation."

Among the key announcements are the updated Dell PowerEdge servers, which now include the R470, R570, R670 and R770 models featuring Intel Xeon 6 Processors with P-cores.

These servers are available in 1U and 2U form factors and support both traditional and emerging workloads such as high-performance computing (HPC), virtualisation, analytics and AI inferencing.

The PowerEdge R770, for example, offers improved workload consolidation, enabling organisations to reduce their data centre footprint while cutting energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions. The PowerEdge R570, meanwhile, has achieved record-breaking performance per watt for Intel systems, aimed at energy-conscious enterprises.

Additionally, Dell is embracing a future-ready architecture through the Data Centre – Modular Hardware System (DC-MHS), part of the Open Compute Project. These designs promote easier integration and enhance customer choice. Dell's OpenManage updates and new Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller (IDRAC 10) capabilities further streamline server management, with performance gains such as up to 33 times reduction in write latency when paired with Dell's PERC13 RAID controller.

On the storage front, Dell PowerStore is being upgraded with intelligent software to simplify data management while boosting performance and security. New features include AI-powered analytics through Dell AIOps, enhanced zero-trust security via Department of Defense smart card authentication, and expanded support for Dell PowerProtect systems.

The company has also introduced the next generation of Dell ObjectScale, which it claims is the industry's highest-performing object storage platform. The ObjectScale XF960 all-flash model delivers up to twice the throughput per node compared to competitors and features eight times greater density than previous versions. Dell is also rolling out the HDD-based ObjectScale X560, designed to accelerate media ingest, backups and AI model training workloads with up to 83% faster throughput.

Dell PowerScale updates include high-density all-flash storage nodes that can provide up to 6 petabytes of data in a single 2U configuration, supporting the high throughput demands of AI operations. Updated hybrid and archive nodes offer better performance and flexibility for long-term data retention.

For data protection, Dell introduced the PowerProtect DD6410 and All-Flash Ready Node. These offerings provide scalable backup solutions, with the DD6410 delivering up to 91% faster restore speeds and the Ready Node boasting 61% faster performance and 36% less power usage. PowerProtect Data Manager has also been updated with anomaly detection and expanded support for virtualised environments.

"Organisations are refocusing their IT strategies to take a disaggregated approach to infrastructure that improves resource management and simplifies management complexity," said Simon Robinson, principal analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group, now part of Omdia. "Dell Technologies is delivering updates across its infrastructure portfolio designed to help customers easily overcome these challenges so that they're ready to manage any workload."

Most of Dell's updated infrastructure offerings are available immediately, with select storage and data protection systems rolling out through Q3 2025.
