DTSL appoints Mark Muru as new Group Chief Executive

Wed, 17th Dec 2025

DTSL has appointed former Datacom executive Mark Muru as Group Chief Executive Officer, marking the first leadership change since the New Zealand IT services firm was founded in the 1990s.

Muru replaces founder Ian McGough, who moves into a strategic role after more than 29 years at the helm. McGough will focus on mergers and acquisitions and high-level client engagement. He will also work on the long-term growth direction of the group.

DTSL operates as an IT services and solutions provider. The company focuses on nationwide field services for large IT vendors and managed services for direct clients.

McGough founded DTSL in 1997. His strategy centred on building a national field service footprint. He then added managed services for direct client relationships. He also drove growth through a series of acquisitions.

The company says it has completed more than 20 acquisitions under his leadership. It credits this approach with building scale and reach. It also links the strategy with DTSL's reputation for quality, stability, and integrity.

Muru joins DTSL after a long career at Datacom. He spent 21 years at the Australian and New Zealand technology services group. He played a central role in expanding Datacom's Wellington operation. Staff numbers in the capital grew from 400 to 1,200 during his tenure.

He previously held responsibility for Datacom's public sector business across Australia and New Zealand. He also led operations in Western Australia and the Australian Capital Territory. The company cites a track record in delivering, renewing, and securing significant public sector contracts.

McGough said the leadership change follows a period of joint planning. He described it as part of a long-term transition for the company's ownership and management.

"Mark agreed to spend 6 months with me in the business scoping out the growth potential I had laid the foundation for. A great deal has been achieved over those six months and we're both really pleased that potential was confirmed," said McGough.

DTSL's nationwide field services business supports large IT vendors. It provides on-the-ground technical support for their customers. The managed services arm engages with organisations directly.

The group has used acquisitions to extend both areas. The deals have added regional coverage and specialist skills. The company has also used deals to expand its client base.

The leadership change keeps McGough involved in these areas. His new role focuses on identifying acquisition targets. He will also engage with key clients on strategic issues.

Muru inherits a business that has grown alongside New Zealand's IT services sector. The company now operates across the country. It serves both multinational vendors and local organisations.

He said DTSL's existing culture and client relationships influenced his decision to join. He also cited the opportunity for expansion as a key factor.

"Ian has built an exceptional company and a legacy of trust that I am honoured to continue. My focus is on the future. I want to build on this foundation and accelerate our growth."

McGough and Muru have known and worked with each other for many years. McGough said this relationship helped shape his succession plan. He said the six-month period working together confirmed the growth prospects he had identified.

The company's board and senior team have acknowledged McGough's long tenure. They have recognised his role in establishing the brand and steering its acquisition strategy. They have also welcomed his ongoing involvement in the next phase of growth.

DTSL staff have expressed formal thanks to McGough for his leadership. They have also recognised his continuing role in the group's development. The company states that he will remain closely linked with major decisions on growth and innovation under the new structure.

Muru will now lead the operational and strategic management of the group. McGough will concentrate on longer-term initiatives and external relationships as the business pursues further expansion.
