Gartner gives its top IT predictions
Thu, 2nd Dec 2010
FYI, this story is more than a year old

Gartner has named its top predictions for IT organisations and users for 2011 and beyond, which highlight the changes in the roles played by technology and IT organisations in business.

More than 100 predictions across all research areas were submitted for consideration this year, with the following being the most popular.

"With costs still under pressure, growth opportunities limited and the tolerance to bear risk low, IT faces increased levels of scrutiny from stakeholders both internal and external," said Darryl Plummer, Managing VP Gartner.

Last year's theme of rebalancing supply, consumer demand and regulation is still present across most of the predictions, says Gartner.

This year's predictions highlight the link between technology decisions and outcomes.

  • By 2015, a G20 nation's critical infrastructure will be disrupted and damaged by online sabotage.
  • By 2015, new revenue generated each year by IT will determine the annual compensation of most new Global 2000 CIOs.
  • By 2015, information-smart businesses will increase recognised IT spending per head by 60%.
  • By 2015, tools and automation will eliminate 25 percent of labour hours associated with IT services.
  • By 2015, 20% of non-IT Global 500 companies will be cloud service providers.
  • By 2014, 90% of organisations will support corporate applications on personal devices.
  • By 2013, 80% of businesses will support a workforce using tablets.
  • By 2015, 10% of your online "friends" will be non-human.
The last one deserves an explanation, “By 2015, efforts to systematise and automate social engagement will result in the rise of social bots, automated software agents that can handle, to varying degrees, interaction with communities of users in a manner personalised to each individual.”
