FYI, this story is more than a year old

Under new ownership, the new-look Orcon has appointed Greg McAlister as its new chief executive officer this morning.

Following a deal to sell the company to a group of Kiwi buyers earlier this week, new Orcon director Warren Hurst says he is delighted McAlister has accepted the role.

“Greg has a wealth of experience in the telecommunications sector and is an extremely capable senior executive,” he says.

“He will provide the leadership Orcon needs to fulfill its fundamental objective – the delivery of exceptional internet services to residential and business customers.

McAlister joins the company from his previous role as GM of Product Marketing at Vodafone New Zealand, where he had responsibility for all products – mobile and fixed.

Prior to that he had a 20-year career with Telecom New Zealand, with his most recent role at the telco being CFO of its $2bn retail division, and assisting with Telecom's demerger.

McAlister says Orcon has a solid customer base and an advanced technology platform, and he is excited to be taking on the challenge of guiding Orcon's future development.

“I intend to ensure Orcon continues to invest in, and capitalise on, the significant growth opportunities that exist in the market," he says.

"My prime objective is to provide the best products and most reliable services to all our customers.

McAlister says Orcon is well placed to ensure the potential of the Government-backed investment in Ultra Fast Broadband is realised, thanks to its reputation for market leading innovation.

“Along with maintaining a robust infrastructure and further improving service delivery, we want to lead the way with the launch of innovative products.

"The arrival of UFB allows us to bring to market new content-based products which will open the door to improved communication, productivity and entertainment.
