Oracle's Larry Ellison calls out AWS as slow and expensive

Onstage yesterday Oracle’s Chairman and CTO, Larry Ellison introduced the latest generation of their core database technology. Version 18c is known as Oracle Autonomous Database and will be available on premises or from Oracle’s own cloud.

Ellison also shared benchmark test results during short demonstrations that highlighted the huge performance gap between Oracle’s latest solution versus its primary competitor Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Detailed comparisons showed Oracle Autonomous Database on Oracle Cloud and Oracle Database running on AWS\. For the test Amazon’s best Oracle database service was used, the Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS).

“These are not Oracle went out and made up the most ridiculous demos to make Amazon look bad they could come up with. These are datasets that we actually used for stress testing, and performance testing, and validating our database.” Says Ellison

In numerous examples with different types of datasets, the Oracle Autonomous Database on Oracle Cloud solution beat the Amazon approach. Even when the Amazon side was changed to running Amazon’s very own RedShift database, Oracle won handily.

“We guarantee you contractually to cut your Amazon bill in half. It’s fairly easy when you’re five to eight times faster. We feel pretty comfortable.” Says Ellison
