FYI, this story is more than a year old

Alcatel-Lucent’s Velocix platform has been picked by Orcon for a high-quality, online video service.

Alcatel-Lucent will deploy its Velocix Digital Media Delivery Platform in key centres across New Zealand while Orcon eyes up new revenue opportunities.

The new platform is said to allow broadcasters, content distributors and website owners a “faster and more efficient connection” to broadband users across multiple networks and devices including PCs, mobiles and TVs.

“As video-on-demand and streaming TV websites grow in popularity, the amount of online video watched by broadband users is growing at an incredible rate,” said Charlie Boyd, Head of Wholesale at Orcon. “By leveraging Alcatel-Lucent’s Velocix infrastructure, we can offer content providers a local content delivery network (CDN) solution that meets their specific requirements, with the assurance of knowing its technology and services are proven by telcos and broadcasters around the world.”

Paul Larbey, General Manager of Velocix added, “Our aim is to work with Orcon to develop a high leverage network that can handle the extra demand efficiently while at the same time, creating the potential for new revenues by exposing the assets within the network in a secure way.”
