Private Internet Access launches split tunnel fix, Apple TV VPN

Mon, 26th Feb 2024

Private Internet Access (PIA), a no-log VPN service provider, has confirmed it is introducing two new features to its product line. The two additions are a macOS split tunneling fix, and a VPN for Apple TV with a specialised dedicated IP option.

The new macOS split tunneling fix is set to launch fully on March 7th, following beta testing initiated on February 22nd. In an industry-leading move, PIA will be making this functionality open source by posting it on GitHub in conjunction with the full product release. This feature allows users to determine which applications should route traffic through an encrypted tunnel, whilst others can access the internet directly via an Internet Service Provider (ISP). The release is a re-introduction of an internet privacy function that was abruptly and unceremoniously pulled from the macOS ecosystem in 2021.

Michele Emiliani, Senior Software Engineer at Private Internet Access, explained the origins of the issue, stating, "In October 2021, a macOS update caused a problem with the 'route-to' directive in the pf firewall. Retransmission errors would arise if an attempt was made to reroute a TCP stream, consequently causing the connection to malfunction." He added that this issue had largely restricted split tunneling via macOS to users operating on outdated OS versions from macOS 10 and older.

Speaking about the redelivery of this popular feature, Himmat Bains, Head of Product at Private Internet Access, said, "Over the past three years, thousands of PIA users have urged us to bring back split tunneling. We're thrilled to re-introduce this beloved feature, providing our users with even more tools that give them increased control over their online privacy." Bains further highlighted the relevance of users' digital privacy and security, stating, "Safeguarding and protecting sensitive communications has a direct and significant impact on the safety, security and wellbeing of both our global userbase and digital citizens everywhere."

PIA's second new offering debuts as the much-anticipated Apple TV VPN. This tool has been specifically designed for tvOS 17 and above, allowing PIA's Apple TV users to enjoy enhanced security and privacy while streaming content. Notably, the Apple TV VPN includes an industry-leading dedicated IP functionality, allowing users' addresses to be individually assigned to them. This eliminates struggles with inaccurate reports of dubious login attempts or issues related to network congestion.

On the launch of the Apple TV VPN, Himmat Bains commented, "For 2023, Apple TV support was one of our most requested features. We're even more delighted to offer dedicated IP support alongside Apple TV functionality in time for 2024's packed sporting schedule, improving on the PIA platform's usability and accessibility."

As PIA continues striving to heighten user experience, the recent introduction of a successful split tunnel for macOS – alongside other improvements – further bolsters their leading position in providing privacy-focused VPN services globally.
