Schneider Electric launches SF6-free switchgear for green grids

Thu, 20th Nov 2025

Schneider Electric has introduced GM AirSeT, a new primary gas-insulated switchgear that does not use SF6, a greenhouse gas commonly found in similar equipment. The company aims to enable utilities, data centres, and industry operators to comply with evolving environmental regulations and address operational challenges related to grid reliability, maintenance and workforce resources.

Regulatory pressures

Recent regulatory changes, including EU regulation 2024/573, are accelerating the shift away from equipment containing fluorinated greenhouse gases. GM AirSeT uses pure air as its insulating medium, rather than alternative proprietary gas mixes or new fluorinated gases, which are also subject to regulatory action. This approach supports end-users in achieving full compliance with both current and anticipated environmental policies within the European Union and other regions considering similar measures.

The device is designed for high-demand environments and offers consistent performance in conditions such as extreme temperatures, high altitudes and humid settings. GM AirSeT's sealed tank design eliminates the need for on-site gas filling, which Schneider Electric says reduces the complexity and regulatory risk at the point of installation and during the equipment's life cycle.

Operational advantages

GM AirSeT incorporates a digital architecture, with embedded sensors that monitor tank pressure and the health of the breaking mechanism. Data from these sensors can be used for condition-based maintenance, which helps extend service intervals and reduces disruptive downtime.

According to Schneider Electric, this monitoring capability can help decrease maintenance activities by up to 40% and reduce downtime by up to 75%. The offering also includes controlled access features, safety interlocks and the option for remote or nearby operation, intended to protect staff by allowing interventions outside the arc flash zone.

Product positioning

GM AirSeT expands Schneider Electric's presence in the primary switchgear market, complementing its position in SF6-free secondary medium-voltage switchgear. The company is targeting large electricity consumers, grid operators, and sectors that require high ratings and robust digital support for their electrical infrastructure.

"Our AirSeT portfolio is growing fast. With our new GM AirSeT range we can help large electricity consumers and grid operators decarbonize and stay ahead of upcoming EU regulations as they grow towards higher and higher ratings," said Melton Chang, EVP Power Systems, Schneider Electric.

Schneider Electric indicates that the GM AirSeT is a response to demands for both environmental responsibility and operational efficiency, particularly where ongoing digitalisation and electrification are key strategic goals.
