Sinch has renamed MessageMedia as Sinch Engage, ending the MessageMedia brand after more than 20 years in the Australian market.

The rebrand further integrates the business into the Swedish communications technology group, which bought MessageMedia for AUD $1.7 billion in 2021 in one of Australia's larger technology exits in recent years. Since then, the business has operated as Sinch MessageMedia.

The change will not alter the underlying service for existing customers. Products, APIs, pricing, contracts and the local support team will remain the same, and the platform will continue to offer messaging across SMS, MMS and WhatsApp.

Sinch is positioning the new name around a broader international identity as businesses increase their use of automated and multichannel customer communications. Customers will also have a path to Rich Communication Services, or RCS, a newer messaging format with more interactive features.

Before the takeover, MessageMedia was already a major player in Australia. Angus Mansfield, Senior Vice President of Sales and Partnerships, APAC at Sinch, said it was handling more than five billion messages a year for tens of thousands of local businesses at the time of the acquisition.

Its role within the wider group has expanded since then. MessageMedia now contributes to a network delivering more than 900 billion customer interactions a year worldwide, and the acquisition helped Sinch deepen its presence among small and medium-sized businesses and mid-market customers in Australia and the wider Asia-Pacific region.

Brand shift

The retirement of the MessageMedia name closes a chapter for an Australian business-to-business technology brand that built its reputation on text messaging for business customers. Under Sinch ownership, the business added WhatsApp, deeper software integrations and AI-based messaging tools, Mansfield said.

"Bringing MessageMedia fully under the Sinch Engage banner is a natural next step in our shared journey," said Angus Mansfield, Senior Vice President of Sales and Partnerships, APAC at Sinch.

"This evolution is about strengthening our customer offerings for an increasingly AI-driven era. By connecting our trusted local platform with Sinch's wider global ecosystem and partnerships, we are giving Australian brands the best of both worlds: the global scale to innovate fast, alongside the dedicated local expertise they have relied on for over two decades."

Market changes

Customer communications are moving towards more AI-driven and multichannel engagement, with businesses under pressure to provide more tailored and timely interactions across customers' preferred channels. Sinch put the global market value at USD $93 billion.

Australia has been slower than some other markets to adopt RCS, which Sinch said is already established in countries including Singapore, Brazil and India. The format is widely seen in the industry as a richer successor to standard text messaging because it supports branded, more interactive exchanges between companies and consumers.

Mansfield said the next phase of the sector would combine those newer formats with the core demands of business messaging, including reliability and trust.

"When Sinch acquired MessageMedia in 2021, it was already the Australian market leader, handling more than five billion messages a year for tens of thousands of local businesses. Since then, its impact has grown and it now contributes to the more than 900 billion customer interactions a year delivered worldwide as part of Sinch's global network.

"As part of Sinch, MessageMedia expanded beyond SMS and MMS into WhatsApp, with deeper application integrations and AI-powered messaging, and next-generation RCS is now coming into play. Becoming Sinch Engage is the natural next step in that journey. The name is catching up with what the business has become."

He also linked the acquisition to Sinch's regional expansion and broader customer base.

"MessageMedia enabled Sinch to expand its presence in the SME and mid-market segments while building a trusted local presence across Australia and the wider APAC region. It has been integral to Sinch's growth to 200,000 customers globally and, as part of Sinch Engage, is a critical component of the no-code, self-serve platform that underpins our global growth."

On the direction of the market, Mansfield said: "Customer communication is moving fast towards AI-driven, multichannel engagement. The global market is already valued at USD $93 billion, and we expect that to grow as customer expectations increase. Once people start experiencing more tailored interactions, they will rightly demand more, raising the bar for brands and the market.

"The next big jump is RCS, which has been live in many markets such as Singapore, Brazil and India for some time, but Australia is still catching up. Alongside AI-powered communications, it will be a game changer for brands because it enables businesses of any size to create rich, personalised conversations.

"However, the fundamentals of customer communications do not change. Customers expect on-time, accurate and trusted messaging on the channels they actually want to use, and rising expectations will only increase the need for sophisticated messaging technology. That is exactly where Sinch Engage sits: pairing Sinch's global infrastructure with the reliability and trust customers have counted on for more than two decades."
